Franz Weninger – Fehérburgundi – Pinot Blanc from Hungary

The Franz Weninger Fehérburgundi 2021 is an organic white wine made from Pinot Blanc grapes, grown on the Hungarian side of Lake Neusiedl. Its vines are rooted in parabraun soil with deposits of weathered bedrock.

The nose entices with a delicate fragrance of wildflowers and meadow herbs, drawing you close to the glass. Then, aromas of yellow apple and pear join in, framed by citrus zest, lime, cedrat lemon, grapefruit, green walnut, and a hint of smoky-bacon appearing in the background. In the glass, it gleams straw-yellow, inviting the first sip. On the palate, the Weninger Fehérburgundi shows an animating juiciness, fresh acidity, and a chalky minerality, even a saltiness. This natural wine, with some time in a large Burgundy glass, becomes expansive with complex aromatics, some lactic phenolics, and a creamy spontaneous note. It's good that Franz didn't banally name his Fehérburgundi "Weißburgunder" (Pinot Blanc), because this way one can expect something extraordinary, and that's exactly what one gets.

Franz Weninger – Wine Preparation

The Pinot Blanc grapes for this wine come from the Frettner vineyard, which belongs to Weninger's winery on the Hungarian side of the border in Sopron. A cool, north-west facing vineyard that receives shade from the forest edge in the afternoon and cool winds from Lake Neusiedl at night. Its calcareous soils bring a cool minerality to the white Burgundy. 5400 vines are cultivated per hectare in the Guyot trellising system, struggling for water and nutrients and thus rooting deeply into the soil. The 23-year-old vines are located at an altitude of 204 meters above sea level, where a Pannonian climate prevails, influenced by the large, shallow lake.

Petra and Franz Weninger cultivate the vineyards of the Weninger winery organically, biodynamically, and they are Respekt certified. The Pinot Blanc grapes were selectively hand-picked in September 2021. After harvesting, the grapes remain on the skins for 10 days in large wooden vats, then they are gently pressed and spontaneously fermented. The Fehérburgundi matured for 11 months in large wooden barrels on its own lees, underwent a natural, biological malolactic fermentation, and was bottled unfiltered in 10,200 bottles in August 2022.
