The mild version is sweet, tomato-forward, and gentle, awarded 2 out of 3 stars at the Great Taste Awards. The spicy version is the house's original sauce, full of bell pepper and spices, and a secret crowd favorite. The hot version follows up with cayenne pepper, pleasantly warming rather than biting. This way, you get to know the heart of the assortment all at once, without having to choose just one variety.

From the Zum heiligen Stein manufactory in Hesse

In 2010, Boris Sauerborn and his wife, Nina, took over the Zum heiligen Stein restaurant in Muschenheim near Lich, named after the roughly 4,000-year-old megalithic tomb that towers over the village.

The chef originally stirred up his own sauce for a lamb currywurst—and guests wanted to take it home by the jar. Soon, calls started coming in from Düsseldorf and Holland. Thus, the restaurant turned into a small ketchup manufactory, which moved into a former bakery in 2015 and into larger premises in 2025 to meet the demand.

Everything is still cooked by hand, in small batches using a few high-quality ingredients. "There is nothing better than homemade," says the credo of Grandma Mia, which appears on every jar—including the three small ones in the trio.

Storage and the larger format

The three jars are ready to be served; once opened, they keep for several weeks in the refrigerator. Because 75g is used up quickly, many people reach for the 400g jar of their favorite variety after the trio to enjoy it at their leisure. And because the Ketchup Trio is small and light, it fits well in a parcel sent by post—with the friendly sheep from Boris's sister, Lisa, on the label, it is always well-received by barbecue enthusiasts and gourmets alike.
