The elixir pourer is a spout made of mouth-blown glass that fits the typical 500 ml Dr. Jaglas apothecary bottle. It takes the guesswork out of pouring and ensures that the same amount ends up in every glass. And as an added bonus, it looks better on the bottle than any standard cork.

Simple, practical, and durable

The pourer consists of two parts: a glass bulb that catches the elixir, and a natural cork stopper that seals the bottle.

The glass is mouth-blown, which is why no two pieces are exactly alike. Small irregularities in the bulb are part of the process and not a defect, but rather the hallmark of manual craftsmanship.

Because the cork has a standard size, the pourer also fits many other bottles. If you don't want to leave it permanently on the Artichoke Elixir, you can just as easily use it on another decanter.

It looks more impressive on the bottle than a simple cap. The glass catches the light, and because the bulb visibly fills when tilted, pouring becomes a small performance – which explains why it is as popular in bars as it is at home.

Tilt, fill, pour

Operation is completed in two movements and is self-explanatory after the first try.

Tilt the bottle until the glass bulb is completely full – this corresponds to exactly 20 ml. Then turn the bottle horizontally, and the portion will run into the glass. Done, without measuring cups and without imprecise estimates.

This amount is not chosen at random by the manufacturer. 20 ml is the recommended serving for all the company's bitters, which come in at 35% vol, and it is the same capacity as the matching tasting glasses.

When it comes to bitters, the dose is truly a matter of taste. Those who pour too generously get mostly alcohol and bitterness, while the subtler herbal notes are lost – in the smaller amount, they stand out much more clearly. Incidentally, this results in twenty-five servings from a 500 ml bottle.

Warm water is sufficient for cleaning. Because cork changes over time, it should not be put in the dishwasher, and after rinsing, the pourer should be allowed to dry openly before being placed back on the bottle.

For liqueurs with high sugar content, rinsing after every evening is recommended anyway. If sweet liquid dries in the bulb, the pourer will be sticky the next time – a quick rinse under the tap reliably prevents this.

A piece of pharmacy inventory for the home bar

Bulb-shaped pourers are not a bar invention but come from the pharmacy, where precise measuring is part of the trade.

That is exactly where the brand comes from. The Jagla family has been concocting their herbal elixirs for generations in the Park-Apotheke in the Elberfeld Luisenviertel in Wuppertal, which Helmut Jagla still runs today. The typical apothecary bottles with their distinctive necks come from the same world.

"The herbal specialties were meant to reach beyond the Bergisches Land region," says Christina Jagla about her move to Berlin at the end of 2015. With the pourer, a piece of this heritage travels to your own home bar.
