Monterosa Verdeal – Extra Virgin Olive Oil – 500ml

Monterosa Verdeal olive oil is a single-varietal, extra virgin olive oil made from the Iberian Verdeal variety. It is very mild, with a particularly fruity note. Aromas of freshly cut grass are paired with a sweet almond scent. Perfect with salads, tomatoes, bread, cold soups, or vinaigrettes. An excellent Monterosa olive oil from hand-picked olives from Portugal.

Monterosa – fine Verdeal from the Algarve

Monterosa is a craft family business in the eastern Algarve. Only about 7km from the cooling sea, a fresh breeze always blows here. In 1969, Detlev von Rosen emigrated from Sweden to Portugal to produce tomatoes and iceberg lettuce for the Northern European market. Later, he was, and still is today, very successful with the cultivation of high-quality ornamental plants.

Since 2000, olive trees have been growing on 20 hectares. The previous summers were hot and dry, and the orange trees on the plantation needed huge amounts of water. (1 orange tree needs 1000 liters of water per week). So, olive trees were planted without further ado, with the goal of producing a particularly high-quality extra virgin olive oil. Five different olive varieties grow at Monterosa: Verdeal, Maçanilha, Picual, Cobrançosa, and Frantoio. However, olive trees were cultivated and cared for in this special place 2000 years ago, as a Roman trade route connecting Lisbon with Corduba led through Moncarpacho. The in-house stone mill, however, is state-of-the-art. The hand-picked olives can be processed into the finest olive oil directly on the plantation without long transport routes.

The best way to discover the taste differences of the five varieties is to try all of them. The Verdeal olive oil is the mildest, greenest oil, followed by the Macanilha variety. The Picual belongs to the medium fruity varieties. The indigenous Portuguese Cobrançosa variety is the spiciest, most potent variety with a good kick of sharpness in the finish.
