Questions about Smoked Salt – Metal tin?

We are happy to help you with Nordur Salt.

Smoked Salt, Icelandic flakes with a whisky aroma

Nordur Salt's Smoked Salt combines geothermal-boiled sea salt flakes from Breiðafjörður with traditional Danish smoking artistry – the aroma is reminiscent of aged whisky. In a metal tin, for the grill, butter, and vegetables.

The Smoked Salt from Nordur Salt is the union of two countries in one tin: Icelandic sea salt flakes from Breiðafjörður travel into a small smokehouse, where smoke from the embers of various woods imparts an almost forgotten aroma according to old Danish tradition – the scent is reminiscent of aged whisky, peat, wood, and long evenings.

Smoky, warm, and surprisingly elegant

Unlike strong smoked salts, the Nordur does not overpower: the smoking remains subtle and multi-layered, while the crunchy flake beneath stays mild and clear. First comes the crunch, then the smoke, then a gentle sweetness – a triad that is more reminiscent of a whisky bar than a smokehouse.

The base is created, like all Nordur salts, on the small island of Karlsey off Reykhólar: seawater from one of the cleanest regions in Europe, boiled solely with geothermal energy using the Icelandic technique from 1753. Only then do the embers take over.

The smoking is small-scale craftsmanship: in the smokehouse, smoke from smoldering embers slowly drifts through the flakes, batch by batch, until the color and aroma are just right. No liquid smoke, no artificial flavors – just wood, embers, and time, just like in the old days.

For the grill, butter, and Sunday eggs

This Smoked Salt seasons everything that can handle a hint of fire: steak and burgers, of course, but also fried fish, baked potatoes, braised vegetables, and ambitious mashed potatoes. A pinch replaces the smoker – practical for anyone who loves smoke but doesn't have a garden.

The most beautiful application is the simplest: good butter, a few smoky flakes sprinkled over it, served with fresh bread – dinner with a campfire feeling is ready. Sprinkle it on a soft-boiled egg or into scrambled eggs, where the smoke joins forces with the yolk. For something mild and pure, look to our classic sea salt flake tin.

If you are using smoked salt for the first time, start sparingly: the whisky aroma is charming, but you don't want it to dominate everything. A small pinch at the end is usually enough – you can always add more, but you can never take it away. This way, the smoke remains the seasoning and not the star – and it is precisely this noble restraint that makes it so endearing in the everyday kitchen.

Iceland boils, Denmark smokes

The fact that this specific salt bears two signatures fits its founding story: Nordur Salt was founded in 2012 by Icelander Garðar Stefánsson and Dane Søren Rosenkilde – two friends who met in Aarhus and opened their saltworks in Breiðafjörður. In this Smoked Salt, their homes meet: Icelandic flake, Danish smoking art.

The whole thing is packaged in the iconic metal tin with the mermaid – refillable, kitchen-proof, and part of the design that won the Red Dot Award in 2014. A tin that looks just as good next to the grill as it does on the dining table.

You can find more smoked relatives in our Smoked Salt category, and the entire island family on the Nordur Salt page. Whisky aroma to sprinkle, a campfire without the sparks – Skål, enjoy your meal, and have a long, smoky, and refined evening at the dinner table!
