Afternoon Blend is a delicately fruity black tea blend from the Danish tea house A.C. Perch's in Copenhagen, grown on a base of black Yunnan and a flavored white tea. In the infusion, the Afternoon Blend smells soft and fruity, reminiscent of ripe pomegranate, dark elderberry, and juicy pear. On the palate, it is soft, round, and mild.

The black Yunnan provides malty depth, the white tea adds lightness, and a delicate vanilla hovers over it all. Malty, fruity, and velvety—that is how the infusion settles on the tongue. 6 grams per 1 liter of boiling water, let steep for 6 minutes; nothing more is needed. Hot, the Afternoon Blend warms on grey days; cold-infused, it becomes a gentle iced tea with a fine berry note on warm days. Because white tea is involved, it remains pleasantly round even after a longer steeping time and rarely becomes bitter.

We serve it in the late afternoon with a piece of shortbread—whenever the cup is allowed to sit longer than the calendar actually permits. Its fruity sweetness pairs well with light cakes, vanilla crescents, or simply a quiet book. The Afternoon Blend comes from A.C. Perch's Thehandel, a tea house that has been selling tea at Kronprinsensgade 5 in Copenhagen since 1835 without changing much. That is over 190 years, and you can tell by the house.

A tin sign with a golden teapot still wobbles on the outer wall today, inside, shiny brass tea canisters line the wooden shelves, and the old apothecary scale weighs the leaves as if they were gold dust. Sales assistants fill loose blends into small bags, calmly and carefully, just as they did a hundred years ago. Whoever has been there once does not forget the scent that greets you right at the shop door.
