Rings – Sauvignon Blanc – VDP.Estate Wine in Organic Quality

The Rings Sauvignon Blanc 2023 from Weingut Rings is a dry VDP.Ortswein (village wine) made from grapes grown in Freinsheim, Kallstadt, and Ungstein vineyards. These vineyards are farmed close to nature by Andreas and Steffen Rings. The skillful use of wood gives the Rings Sauvignon Blanc spice and power. It displays aromas of gooseberry, honeysuckle, freshly mown grass, bell pepper, and a hint of pepper. On the palate, it is assertively mineral with striking acidity and length, yet with plenty of juiciness and fruit and a long finish.

Neither Loire nor New Zealand, but rather Pfalz: fresh Sauvignon aromatics with body and a beautiful length.

Rings – Winemaking

The Rings brothers place great importance on healthy soils, vines, and grapes. They begin early with the sowing of buckwheat, clover, and radish, which prevents soil erosion, attracts beneficial insects, and retains moisture in the soil, which is revitalized by applying horse manure as a natural fertilizer. Canopy management is also important for the quality of the wine: double shoots are manually removed, and depending on the weather, the grapes are defoliated and desuckered to aerate them. The Sauvignon Blanc grapes from Freinsheim vineyards grow on sand, gravel, and loess and are hand-picked and selected at the optimal harvest time, with some being pressed as whole clusters. Partial spontaneous fermentation occurs. Aging takes place partly in 500L tonneau barrels (30%), which Andreas and Steffen manage very well, and partly in stainless steel tanks. This makes the wine more complex, multifaceted, and aromatic in a positive sense.
