The Rings Kallstadt Riesling vom Kalkfels 2022 from Weingut Rings is a dry VDP.ORTSWEIN from vineyards in the Kallstadt area. These sites are characterized by a cooler climate and limestone and calcareous marl soils. This is where wines shaped by the soil and their origin are produced. The Kallstadt Riesling vom Kalkfels is incredibly juicy, showing apple, quince, and apricot, complemented by limestone and chalk minerality, then fresh lime and cooling mint. An organic wine so typical of the style of the two Rings brothers: cool, lean, mineral, purist – simply excellent.

Rings Riesling vom Kalkfels – Winemaking

The Rings brothers place great importance on healthy soils, as only from them can healthy vines stand and healthy grapes grow. They start early by sowing buckwheat, clover, and radish, which prevents soil erosion, attracts beneficial insects, and retains moisture in the soil, which is revitalized with the application of horse manure as a natural fertilizer. Canopy management is also important for the quality of the wine: double shoots are removed manually, and depending on the weather conditions, the grapes are defoliated and thinned out to aerate them. The grapes are harvested by hand at the optimal time, selected, and pressed as whole clusters. Yields are 5,000 L/Ha. After a short maceration period, natural yeasts are allowed to work and initiate spontaneous fermentation. 90% of the aging takes place in large wooden barrels, which Andreas and Steffen manage very well, and 10% in stainless steel tanks. This makes the wine more complex, multi-layered, and aromatic in a positive sense. The wine is bottled without fining agents, enzymes, or other aids.
