The Kallstadter Steinacker Riesling 2022 from Weingut Rings is a dry wine from the VDP. ERSTE LAGE Kallstadter Steinacker. This site is the coolest site of Weingut Rings and is characterized by limestone and marl soils that barely store water, so the roots of the vines have to dig deep into the earth. At night, the proximity to the Palatinate Forest brings cool winds into the Steinacker. Wines are created here that are shaped by the soil and origin: cool, precise, lean, mineral. The Rings Kallstadter Steinacker Riesling is incredibly puristic, showing apple, some fresh citrus, delicate herbs, and an almost unapproachable limestone and chalk minerality. Impressive. A wine so typical of the style of the two Rings brothers, which they simply master completely and for which their wines are loved.

Rings – Winemaking

The Kallstadter Steinacker is a rather large (151 hectares) single vineyard, located around the Palatinate wine village of Kallstadt, which lies between Grünstadt and Bad Dürkheim. It has been mentioned in documents since 1270, making it older than the Kallstadter Saumagen. The vines stand between 160 and 240 meters above sea level on barren soils characterized by limestone and rugged rock. Here, the vines have to fight for water and minerals and root deep into the Steinacker. Yields are low, but the quality is beyond any doubt.

About 4 hectares of Steinacker are cultivated by Andy and Steffen Rings. They attach great importance to healthy soils, as only from them can healthy vines stand and healthy grapes grow. Therefore, they start early with sowing buckwheat, clover, and radish, which prevents soil erosion, attracts beneficial insects, and retains moisture in the soil, which is revitalized with the application of horse manure as a natural fertilizer. Canopy management is also important for the quality of the wine: double shoots are removed manually, and depending on the weather, the grapes are defoliated and thinned to aerate them. The grapes are harvested and selected by hand at the optimal harvest time and pressed as whole clusters. 4,200 L/Ha are harvested. After a short maceration period, the natural yeasts are allowed to act and initiate spontaneous fermentation. The aging takes place partly in stainless steel tanks, partly in half-piece barrels, where it remains on the full lees for 10 months before being bottled without fining, enzymes, or other aids.
