The Pfalz Spätburgunder 2022 from Weingut Rings is a bone-dry VDP.GUTSWEIN from the Pfalz region. The Spätburgunder grapes grow in both Kallstadt and Freinsheim vineyards, which are personally managed by the Rings brothers, Andreas and Steffen, from pruning to harvest.

For an estate wine, the focus is on the typical characteristics of the grape variety rather than those of a specific location or vineyard. Thus, the Spätburgunder Pfalz from Weingut Rings showcases the characteristics of its varietal: ripe cherries and a beautiful spiciness on the nose, which continues on the palate. It is dense and juicy, bone-dry yet soft on the finish.

Rings Spätburgunder – Winemaking

The Rings brothers place great importance on healthy soils, as only from them can healthy vines stand and healthy grapes grow. They begin early with sowing buckwheat, clover, and radish, which prevents soil erosion, attracts beneficial insects, and retains moisture in the soil, which is revitalized with the application of horse manure as a natural fertilizer. Canopy management is also important for the quality of the wine: double shoots are manually removed, and depending on the weather conditions, the grapes are defoliated and thinned to ensure aeration. The small-berried grapes from French clones are hand-picked at the optimal harvest time, sorted and selected again at the winery, and destemmed. After a short maceration period, natural yeasts are allowed to work and initiate spontaneous fermentation. The wine was aged for 15 months in used barriques.
