The Ungsteiner Nussriegel Riesling 2023 from Weingut Rings is a dry wine from the VDP.ERSTE LAGE Ungsteiner Nussriegel. This site is characterized by clay-rich loess-loam soils, with typical Palatinate red sandstone in the subsoil. The rather warm site is always a few days ahead of the cooler Steinacker in terms of vegetation. This produces wines that are shaped by soil and origin, fruity and with a soft creaminess. The Rings Ungsteiner Nussriegel Riesling is an incredibly powerful, impactful Riesling, with clear notes of ripe pome fruit and yellow fruits on the nose, and apple, pear, apricot, a hint of caramel, and a beautiful warm spice from the sandstone on the palate. Accessible even at an early stage.

Rings Riesling Nussriegel – Winemaking

The single vineyard Nussriegel is located in the municipality of Ungstein, which belongs to Bad Dürkheim. The approximately 70-hectare vineyards, facing south/southwest, have a slope of 5-15%. The site owes its name to the many walnut trees that used to stand between the rows of vines. The warmer, frost-proof site is characterized by loamy sandy soils with red sandstone in the subsoil. The Rings brothers attach great importance to healthy soils, as only from them can healthy vines stand and healthy grapes grow. Therefore, they start early with the sowing of buckwheat, clover, and radish, which prevents soil erosion, attracts beneficial insects, and retains moisture in the soil, which is revitalized with the application of horse manure as a natural fertilizer. Canopy management is also important for the quality of the wine: double shoots are removed manually, and depending on the weather conditions, the grapes are defoliated and thinned to aerate them. The grapes are harvested by hand at the optimal time and selected, and pressed as whole clusters. The yield is 4,500 L/Ha. After a short maceration period, natural yeasts are allowed to work and initiate spontaneous fermentation. The aging takes place partly in stainless steel tanks, partly in Halbstück barrels, where it remains on the full lees for 9 months before being bottled without fining, enzymes, or other aids.
