Steitz Chardonnay Alte Reben 2023 – Elegant Terroir Wine from Rheinhessen

Steitz Chardonnay Alte Reben 2023 is the epitome of pure terroir quality from Rheinhessen. Harvested from over 30-year-old vines on volcanic melaphyre, spontaneously fermented, and aged for 10 months in Tonneau – this Chardonnay showcases its mineral-salty freshness, fine creaminess, and clear cool-climate structure.

Steitz Terroir Wine – Advantages at a Glance:

  • Terroir-Driven & Mineral – volcanic melaphyre soil imparts salty-cool tension.
  • Old Vines & Artisanal Vinification – intense fruit and structure through several hours of maceration, spontaneous fermentation, and bâtonnage.
  • Harmony of Texture & Freshness – delicately creamy Tonneau aging, balanced acidity, and precise interplay of acidity.

Volcanic Melaphyre Soil as a Flavor Anchor

The grapes come from one of the coolest locations in Rheinhessen, the "Rheinhessische Schweiz" (Rhenish Switzerland). The volcanic melaphyre soil, rich in calcareous deposits, gives this Chardonnay its salty minerality and precise structure. What used to be "just" a local wine now presents itself as a true terroir statement: Chardonnay Alte Reben Wonsheim.

Tradition Meets Craftsmanship

The regenerative agriculture practiced by the father-son duo Christian and Finn Steitz ensures a natural balance of the soils. This includes biodiverse cover crops and rolling, applying compost teas, gentle pruning, manual leaf removal, and of course, hand harvesting.

Hand-harvested, pressed after maceration, and spontaneously fermented – aged for 10 months in Tonneau on the lees with regular bâtonnage. This minimalist approach ensures depth and authenticity for the "Chardonnay Alte Reben" – without excessive oak influence. The new label emphasizes the craftsmanship and origin.

Fine Fruit, Salty Freshness, Clear Expression

In the glass, a complex spectrum unfolds: yellow apple, pear, melon, quince, interwoven with delicate nutty nuances and fine woody spice, all with a saline-oily texture. The freshness remains cool, the structure velvety-creamy yet refreshing. A Chardonnay for discerning connoisseurs.

The mineral Steitz Chardonnay Alte Reben 2023 from 30-year-old vines, grown on melaphyre, aged for 10 months in Tonneau – salty-mineral, delicately creamy, with a clear structure. Elegant, fresh – a clear statement from Rheinhessen.

Steitz Chardonnay Alte Reben 2023 from Rheinhessen – grown on volcanic soil, spontaneously fermented, Tonneau-aged, with salty minerality and creamy texture. An elegant Rheinhessen wine.
