Nussbaumer Gewürztraminer – South Tyrolean Masterpiece from Cantina Tramin

The Cantina Tramin Nussbaumer Gewürztraminer 2023 from South Tyrol is a top-class Gewürztraminer – a South Tyrolean masterpiece. For decades, it has been awarded 3 glasses in Gambero Rosso every year. The Gewürztraminer grape has reddish-colored berries; in the glass, the Nussbaumer Gewürztraminer displays a brilliant, intense golden yellow. It possesses an incomparable spectrum of aromas and a noble, finely structured fruit flavor. The Nussbaumer Gewürztraminer reveals a kaleidoscope of scents, such as rose petals, spicy lily blossoms, ylang-ylang, ripe yellow exotic fruits, honeydew melon, mango, passion fruit, lychee, citrus zest, and spicy notes of dried herbs, ginger, always accompanied by a hint of spicy nuances of saffron, cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg. On the palate, it shows a deep aroma, is full-bodied and rich in extract, yet with finely spiced juiciness and salty minerality, which becomes more prominent with age and culminates in an almost endlessly long finish.

Nussbaumer is a truly fascinating food companion. It pairs well with fish antipasti and smoked dishes, well-aged soft cheese, white meat, swordfish, or tuna. It is ideal with crustaceans and seafood and a spectacular companion to spicy dishes of oriental cuisine and creative spicy-aromatic creations, such as combinations with mushrooms, Swiss chard, fennel, avocado, savoy cabbage, galangal root, ginger, oranges, apricots, jams, and fresh herbs like tarragon, rosemary, dill, thyme, bay leaf, chervil, saffron, mint, or lemongrass, which offer an unleashed interplay of flavors.

Cantina Tramin – Winemaking

A mild, low-precipitation winter with plenty of sunshine was followed in the 2023 vintage by a dry March with comparatively early budburst. Although spring was rather cool and rainy, June saw a mix of hot sunny days and rainfall. A hot summer and a rainy start to September demanded a lot of work from the winemakers. Fortunately, the weather gods blessed South Tyrol with a golden autumn and ideal conditions for the grape harvest. Thanks to targeted work in the vineyard, as well as the experience and care of the cooperative members of the Tramin winery, the numerous challenges of the 2023 vintage were mastered with flying colors. The white wines of the 2023 vintage are cool and delicate and impress with juicy freshness and crispness. The red wines stand out for their elegance and finesse.

All grapes for this Gewürztraminer Nussbaumer come from the Söll vineyard near Tramin. The vineyards have calcareous, loamy to gravelly-loamy soils and are exposed to strong temperature fluctuations between day and night. The grapes are harvested by hand into small containers and immediately destemmed upon delivery. After a short maceration, they are gently pressed. Fermentation takes place slowly and cool in small stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature (18°C). The must is clarified by natural sedimentation of solids. The subsequent aging, also in small stainless steel containers, takes place without malolactic fermentation, in constant contact with the yeasts until the end of August. After bottling, the wine undergoes bottle aging for at least 3 more months. The entire aging process thus takes no less than 14 months. Shelf life 7-15 years.

Kellerei Tramin

Die traditionsreiche Kooperative Kellerei Tramin wurde 1898 gegründet und zählt heute 300 familiengeführte Mitgliedsbetriebe. Auf 270 ha gedeihen elf Rebsorten auf Lehm-, Kalk- und Vulkanböden in Höhen von 250–850 m. Kellermeister Willi Stürz prägt seit 20 Jahren besonders den Gewürztraminer-Stil. Ein 2010 errichtetes, nachhaltiges Kellereigebäude mit Vinothek lädt Besucher ein, mit Blick auf den Kalterer See zu genießen.
