The Cantina Tramin Urban Lagrein Riserva 2022 is a dry, powerful red wine from South Tyrol. Lagrein is an ancient autochthonous grape variety known for its deep ruby to garnet red color. The wine features aromas of violets, blackberries, blueberries, and black currants. On the palate, the Cantina Tramin Urban Lagrein is well-structured, impressive with its typically tart nuances, full-bodied, and velvety in its tannins. Here, forest berries meet bittersweet chocolate, leading to a long-lasting finish. This high-quality, complex Lagrein is a wonderful accompaniment to hearty Tyrolean dishes, excellent with game and dark meats, and stands its ground alongside aged mountain cheeses.

Cantina Tramin – Winemaking

The 2022 vintage began with above-average spring temperatures, which favored early budding. Sustained warm temperatures in May led to rapid flowering. Thanks to targeted vineyard management and occasional rain, the vines were kept in a stress-free condition despite summer phases of extreme heat. The harvest began almost two weeks earlier than usual. Because the weather cooperated perfectly, grapes of outstanding quality were harvested throughout the entire period. The white wines of the 2022 vintage exhibit a distinct, nuanced fruitiness with balanced acidity.

The 20 to 100-year-old vines for this South Tyrolean red wine from Cantina Tramin grow on hillsides between 230-300 m above sea level in soils of limestone, porphyry, and sandy loam. The exposure of the vineyards varies significantly. Half are oriented to the west, 40% to the south-west, and 10% to the south. The grapes were harvested at the time of their respective optimal physiological ripeness between early and late October, brought to the winery in small containers, and destemmed. Maceration takes place in large wooden barrels at a controlled temperature (28°C), followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged in barriques for 12 months, followed by an additional 6 months in concrete vats. After bottling, the wine is stored in the bottle for at least another 6 months. Only 20,000 bottles of Urban Lagrein are produced.
