Black Kerala pepper, which comes from Periyar in India, is indeed harvested from unripe, green fruits, which, however, often turn black through fermentation in the sunlight, become firmer and wrinkled, but also more intense in pungency. It has a medium-sized, irregularly brown grain and an aromatic pungency.
