Kohl Cuvée Apple Juice with Apple Mint combines naturally cloudy mountain apple juice from the Ritten with an extract of hand-picked apple mint from the South Tyrolean mountains. Milder than peppermint, with a long, cooling finish – one of Thomas Kohl’s most popular juices.

Apple juice with apple mint is a cuvée from Thomas Kohl’s cidery on the Ritten: aromatic mountain apple juice, refined with apple mint that grows in the South Tyrolean mountains. Refreshing on hot days and even when it’s cooler. "Apple Mint," as we affectionately call the juice, is one of the most beloved in the entire Kohl family.

In the glass, the juice shimmers light and straw-yellow. The apple mint is milder than classic peppermint but clearly perceptible – it overlays the sweetness of the mountain apple with a fine, spicy note and leaves behind a long, wonderfully cooling finish. Light, juicy, stimulating: thanks to the mint, the mountain apple juice gains lightness and drinkability.

Aperitif, finger food, and a summer evening

Apple juice with apple mint is right at home as an aperitif, accompanying finger food, summery salads, and light appetizers.

It likes things salty, sour, or spicy and cools down every hearty bite. With gin or white rum, the apple mint turns into a cocktail where the mint is already infused; you only need ice and a tall glass. Served neat over ice, it finds its place when the evening gets long and the group is looking for something non-alcoholic with flavor.

Picked at the balsamic moment

The apple mint grows in the mountains of South Tyrol and is picked by hand – specifically at the "balsamic moment," the precise time when the plant contains the most essential oils. A window of just a few days a year.

The more accurately this moment is captured, the clearer and cooler the mint presents itself later in the glass. An extract is made from the fresh leaves and added to the mountain apple juice. The apples for it grow around the Troidner Hof, just under a thousand meters up – at this altitude, they retain the acidity that makes the mint truly shine.

This is the art of "affinage": a term from the world of cheese and wine that Thomas claims for his juices – and rightly so, as he can call himself Italy’s first apple juice affineur. Both partners benefit, the apple as well as the mint.

Bronze at the "Mostbarkeiten"

At the great Alpe-Adria "Mostbarkeiten" tasting in 2019 in Carinthia, the mountain apple juice with apple mint took 15 out of 20 points, earning bronze – out of nearly 1,600 products from 300 producers across 5 countries, judged by a 25-member expert jury.

Eight Kohl juices reached the podium at this tasting, Kohl has compiled the results: four golds, two silvers, two bronzes – and the national victory for the single-varietal Pinova. Eight podium spots at a single tasting.

All ingredients are processed at the height of ripeness, and the juice is preserved solely through gentle pasteurization – in the end, the bottle contains apple and mint, nothing else. It is vegan in any case, confirmed by the European Vegetarian Union seal. We have seen many juices come and go on the shelf since 2002, but this one remains.

To let the essential oils unfold

Served well-chilled at 8 to 10 degrees in a stemmed glass, the essential oils unfold just like in a wine. Once opened, it should be kept refrigerated and is good for 6 days; unopened, the bottle will wait in a cool, dark place for a year.
