Schneider Tohuwabohu 2020 – Red Wine Cuvée from the Palatinate

The Markus Schneider Tohuwabohu 2020 is a distinctive red wine cuvée made from Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon from Ellerstadt in the Palatinate. One is actually familiar with this combination from Bordeaux, where the Merlot calms and balances the sometimes boisterous Cabernet.

The word "Tohuwabohu" is derived from the Book of Genesis and describes the greatest possible chaos that requires the ordering hand of God, and yet it also fits the life situation of the Schneider family at the time this red wine cuvée was first released. In 2007, their son Nicolaus was born, and at the same time, construction was underway at the winery. Thus, the Tohuwabohu is dedicated to the new arrival, who turned everything upside down – and rearranged much of it.

The Tohuwabohu by Markus Schneider exhibits a dense bouquet of red fruits, such as sour cherries, black currants, and raspberries, accompanied by dark cocoa and vanilla; roasted notes and herbal hints of thyme and bay leaf round out the impression. On the palate, it is juicy and full of tension, dense and muscular with soft tannins and a long-lasting finish.

Markus Schneider – Winemaking

The late-ripening grapes for this red wine from Markus Schneider grow in the warmest plots around Ellerstadt in the Palatinate. At the right time, fully ripe, healthy grapes of the different varieties are harvested by hand and gently processed in the modern winery. Following classic mash fermentation in open wooden fermentation vats and a maceration period of 14 days, the mash is gently pressed under low pressure and then, without external intervention, one quarter is aged in new wooden barrels, while the rest is aged in used wood.

We store wine professionally, in the dark and at a constant temperature in modern rooms temperature-controlled by geothermal energy and a photovoltaic system.
