The Markus Schneider Holy Moly 2018 is a velvety, full-bodied red wine made from the Syrah grape variety, grown in Ellerstadt in the Palatinate region. The phrase "Holy Moly" was uttered by Walter Matthau when he caught sight of the breathtaking Sophia Loren in the film Grumpy Old Men. Perhaps Markus Schneider was similarly breathless when he tasted his 2011 vintage Syrah for the first time and decided to name it after this movie quote. From then on—2009 was the first vintage, 2011 the second—the Shiraz has only been bottled in perfect years.

Markus Schneider’s Holy Moly displays a dense bouquet of dark berries, such as blackberries, blackcurrants, and ripe plums, joined by peppery spice and smoky notes; classic Syrah aromas like licorice and violets round off the impression. On the palate, it exhibits densely woven fruit and is powerful, complex, juicy, and full of tension, with soft tannins and a pleasant extract sweetness.

Syrah has reached cult status in many parts of the world. The well-traveled vines thrive magnificently in the hot, skeleton-rich plots of the northwestern fields. There, Markus Schneider succeeds in leaving the "MADE IN GERMANY" stamp on one of the most extravagant grape varieties in the world.

Markus Schneider – Winemaking

The Syrah grapes for this red wine from Markus Schneider grow in the warmest plots around Ellerstadt in the Palatinate. At the right moment, highly ripe, healthy grapes are harvested by hand and gently processed in the modern winery. After classic mash fermentation in open wooden fermentation vats and a maceration period of 8 days, the mash is gently pressed under low pressure and subsequently matured in both new and used wooden barrels without any outside intervention.

We store our wines professionally, in the dark and at a constant temperature, in modern rooms tempered with the help of geothermal energy and a photovoltaic system.
