The Markus Schneider Holy Moly 2020 is a velvety, full-bodied red wine made from the Syrah grape variety, grown in Ellerstadt in the Palatinate. The phrase "Holy Moly," which roughly translates to "holy cow," was used by Walter Matthau when he caught sight of the breathtaking Sophia Loren in the film Grumpy Old Men. Perhaps Markus Schneider was similarly breathless when he tasted his Syrah from the 2011 vintage for the first time and named it after this movie quote. From then on, the Shiraz has only been bottled in perfect years.

The Holy Moly by Markus Schneider displays a dense bouquet of dark berries, such as blackberries, black currants, and ripe plums; peppery spice and smoky notes join in, and typical Syrah aromas like licorice and violets round off the impressions. On the palate, it shows densely woven fruit, is powerful and complex, juicy and full of tension, with soft tannins and a pleasant extract sweetness.

In many parts of the world, Syrah has now achieved cult status. In the hot, skeleton-rich plots of the northwestern fields, the well-traveled vines thrive magnificently. There, Markus Schneider succeeds in putting the stamp "MADE IN GERMANY" on one of the most extravagant grape varieties in the world.

Markus Schneider – Syrah Winemaking

The Syrah grapes for this red wine by Markus Schneider grow in the warmest plots around Ellerstadt in the Palatinate. At the right time—in this case, September 28, 2020—highly ripe, healthy grapes are harvested by hand and gently processed in a modern press house. After classic maceration in open wooden fermentation tanks and a maceration period of 18 days, the mash is gently pressed under low pressure and subsequently aged for 14 months in new and used wooden barrels without any outside intervention, then matured for another 22 months in the bottle before it goes on sale.

We store the Syrah professionally, in the dark and at a constant temperature in modern rooms climate-controlled by geothermal energy and a photovoltaic system.
