Viognier 2021 - White Wine by Oliver Zeter - Rhône meets Palatinate

The Oliver Zeter Viognier 2021 is an opulent, creamy wine, enormously rich in flavor with floral notes of mirabelle plum, nutmeg, roses, and roasted almonds. It also shows a lot of fruit sweetness and roasted notes.

The grapes from Oliver Zeter's best vineyards are hand-sorted, spontaneously fermented without must clarification, and exclusively aged in 300 and 500-liter wooden barrels. After a long lees aging until summer, the wines are bottled unfined before autumn. The complexity of these wines is the focus here, framed by the delicate expression of the wooden barrel. Wines with depth, elegance, and structure – Slow Wine.

Viognier – the underrated from the Rhône

Viognier is an old grape variety originating from the Rhône, which is rarely cultivated in Germany due to climatic conditions. Three vineyards in the localities of Edenkoben, Diedesfeld, and Hambach are planted with this variety as an experimental cultivation. The training is done as a cordon, which results in a linear and thus easier-to-manage grape zone. Nevertheless, the cultivation of this variety in our latitudes proves to be very labor-intensive due to its enormous fertility. The vineyards are permanently greened, partly by natural herbs and partly by targeted sowing.

Harvesting took place as late as weather and the health of the grapes allowed. Grapes were harvested in small, 20 kg crates. Subsequently, the grapes were crushed and pressed. The juice was immediately placed in used French oak barriques – where the must was then spontaneously fermented. In spring, partial malolactic fermentation occurred, and the wine rested on its fine lees until summer, which was stirred regularly (batonnage).
