The Walnut Bread Board – XS by Dutchdeluxes is a small serving board made of solid walnut, measuring 34 x 19 centimeters and featuring a surrounding groove. At 1.05 kilograms, it is the lightest board in this series and, like all the others, is equipped with a handle and a leather strap.

Walnut Bread Board – XS is the dark version of the small serving board from Dutchdeluxes, cut from solid walnut wood. The surface measures 34 by 19 centimeters and is sufficient for a breakfast, a snack, or a small selection of cheeses. With a thickness of two centimeters, the board weighs 1.05 kilograms and is easy to hold in one hand.

Chocolate brown with a calm grain

Walnut offers a deep, chocolate-brown color palette, which is interspersed with lighter veins and occasionally violet shades. The grain is significantly calmer than that of oak because the pores are finer and protrude less from the surface. With this small format, the entire surface lies before you like a single leaf and can be taken in at a glance. No two pieces are alike, as every trunk has stored its own story in its grain.

How light-colored foods appear against a dark background

On dark walnut, light-colored foods stand out much more sharply than would ever be possible on a light wood. White goat cheese, a sliced piece of baguette, and a handful of almonds gain a clear outline on this base. Red berries, green herbs, and yellow butter visibly gain luminosity once the deep brown is underneath. In a photo of the breakfast table, this contrast makes the difference between a flat and a deep image.

The small size and its weight

At 1.05 kilograms, this board can be taken from the shelf with one hand and put back once loaded. Thirty-four by nineteen centimeters is enough for one person who wants to have an egg, bread, and jam in front of them in the morning. At the same time, there is enough mass for the surface to remain steady while cutting and not slide across the countertop. On a side table or in bed, the board replaces a small tray and carries a cup, spoon, and pastry.

Groove at the edge and two usable sides

A narrow channel runs around the cutting surface and collects whatever escapes when slicing fruit, tomatoes, or pickled vegetables. Both surfaces are explicitly intended for use, so one takes on the cutting and the other the serving. Dutchdeluxes finishes the walnut at the factory with natural grapeseed oil and beeswax, which deepens the dark color even further. The board is manufactured in the Netherlands from a single piece of solid wood that is two centimeters thick.

Keep dry, occasionally re-oil

Walnut can withstand a quick rinse under running water, but neither soaking in the sink nor a cycle in the dishwasher. Dry the board immediately after rinsing and stand it upright against the wall to air out. The microwave and oven are also out of the question, as dry heat can cause the solid wood to crack at the edges. If the surface appears gray and dull later on, a little food-safe wood oil on a soft cloth will help.
