Sparkling grape juice from Muskateller by Cantina Kurtatsch

Flein Fizz from Cantina Kurtatsch is a sparkling grape juice from South Tyrol, pressed predominantly from Muskateller and completely alcohol-free. It is neither a fruit prosecco nor a dealcoholized sparkling wine, but unfermented grape juice with fine carbonation.

Flein Fizz from Cantina Kurtatsch is a sparkling grape juice from South Tyrol, bottled in the brand's signature 750-milliliter Flein bottle. Nine-tenths Muskateller give it its floral aroma, while the remainder is Sauvignon Blanc, which adds herbaceous freshness. Because nothing is fermented, the label reads 0.0 percent alcohol.

Nutmeg blossom, yellow apple, orange zest

The juice appears straw-yellow in the glass, and the Muskateller announces itself as soon as it's poured with that floral fragrance that no other grape can quite replicate.

On the palate, the sweetness of the Moscato Giallo grape hits first, but the vibrant acidity cuts right through and cleanses it away. What remains are notes of yellow apple, floral nutmeg blossom, and a fine hint of orange zest. The delicate carbonation elevates the whole profile, making the juice light.

The fizz is not just an accessory; it is the reason this juice doesn't feel sticky. It carries the sweetness through the glass while stripping away its heaviness. This transforms a grape juice into a beverage that even adults will want to drink more than half a glass of.

For toasts and roast chicken

Wherever sparkling wine would usually be poured, toast with Flein Fizz instead—no one at the table will need to explain why there is no alcohol in their glass.

It finds its place alongside pasta, Asian cuisine with its spice, roast chicken, and grilled fish, as the acidity cuts right through fat. The floral Muscat note, in turn, holds its own against bold spices. It also remains a contender alongside a fruity dessert. It should be served well-chilled at 8 to 10 degrees Celsius in a wine glass.

A single-varietal counterpart can be found in the Sauvignon Blanc grape juice, and those who prefer apple will find what they are looking for in the mountain apple juices from South Tyrol.

Why the Muskateller must leave the vine early

The Muskateller vines for the Fizz grow on sand and gravel with a high dolomite content, in steep vineyards between 350 and 450 meters. Muskateller is an aromatic variety that can quickly become too sweet in the sun.

For this reason, the harvest takes place earlier than for wine, as only a grape that is not yet fully ripe provides enough acidity. Without it, the juice would have turned into a syrup rather than a beverage suitable for a meal.

It is pressed gently, bottled cold, and heated only very briefly. This prevents the volatile Muscat notes from being lost in the vat. Carbonation is added only at the very end. Harald Cronst oversees this process for Cantina Kurtatsch, following the same rules that all three Flein producers have agreed upon in writing.

A bottle for everyone at the table

Sunday morning, a tray of onion tart on the table, and the bottle comes out of the fridge so cold that it frosts over immediately. Everyone at the table gets a full glass.

Once opened, the carbonation will hold for about two days with a good stopper; after that, the juice goes still and tastes noticeably sweeter. The bottle is therefore better suited for a group than for drinking solo. More from the south of South Tyrol can be found in the Cantina Kurtatsch assortment. This is what moderation tastes like when you aren't giving up a thing.

Cantina Kurtatsch
