Tomaten Sugo Napule e, Italianavera's greeting from Naples

Tomaten Sugo Napule e by Italianavera is a Neapolitan sauce with garlic, chili, and plenty of oregano, bottled in a small milk bottle. The name is shared with Pino Daniele's famous song "Napule è," a declaration of love to the contradictions and beauty of Naples.

The Tomaten Sugo Napule e by Italianavera is a spicy Neapolitan sauce with fresh garlic, a hint of chili, the finest extra virgin olive oil, and plenty of freshly picked oregano. Its name alludes to Pino Daniele's song "Napule è," that 1977 Neapolitan anthem that celebrates the city in all its contradictions—sometimes beautiful, sometimes raw. Bottled in a small, nostalgic milk bottle, this sauce brings a piece of that complexity straight to the plate.

Spicy, garlicky, and piquant

How do you recognize a good Neapolitan sauce? By the garlic, chili, and generous amounts of fresh oregano—spicy, garlicky, and piquant all at once, just like this Tomaten Sugo Napule e. Matching the milk bottle, which is reminiscent of times past, the taste of this sauce also transports some of the nostalgia of old Neapolitan kitchens. The abundance of oregano gives the sauce a herbaceous depth that is rarely used so generously in typical sauces, while the garlic provides a clear, yet not overpowering base note.

If you heat the sauce briefly in the pan, its full herbal aroma unfolds within 10 minutes, significantly more intense than in Italianavera's milder recipes. If you want to increase the chili content, simply add an extra pinch; the basic recipe accommodates this adjustment perfectly.

For pasta, pizza, and a quick dinner

Tomaten Sugo Napule e goes well with baked pasta, lasagna, or macaroni, as well as penne with provolone, just as the original recipe suggests. This sauce also works well as a spicy base for a quick pizza or with toasted garlic bread. The small milk bottle contains 300 g of sauce and is enough for 2 to 3 portions of pasta; for larger appetites, we recommend doubling the amount.

Those looking for a spicier version with parsley instead of oregano will find it in Italianavera's Tomaten Sugo Audace, while those who prefer a mild sauce without any chili should choose the Tomato Basil Sauce. More sauces and tomatoes from Campania can be found in the Pasta, Risotto, and Sauce category in the shop.

Diana Attianese and her greeting to Naples

Unlike most recipes in the range, Tomaten Sugo Napule e does not bear an Italian fantasy name, but cites the title of one of the most famous Neapolitan songs of all time. The reference fits, whether consciously chosen or a coincidental proximity: both song and sauce celebrate Naples with all its rough edges. For Diana Attianese, who herself stands between tradition and new beginnings, this duality fits her own story—growing up in the shadow of her father's canning business and yet carving out her own path.

Diana Attianese herself grew up between the tomato fields of San Marzano sul Sarno, less than a half-hour drive from the Naples that Pino Daniele sings about in his song as a city full of opposites, sometimes harsh, sometimes of stunning beauty. It is precisely this tension between sweetness and heat, between tomato and chili, that is reflected in the taste of this sauce.

"Some names don't have to be thought up; they are simply in the air," says Diana Attianese regarding recipes like this one, which have found their name rather than being invented. Anyone opening the small milk bottle will taste less of an artificial product and more of a piece of authentic Neapolitan cuisine.
