Riesling Estate – from the Wittmann Organic Winery

The 2023 Wittmann Riesling Estate from the Wittmann winery impresses with its mineral richness and great length. This 2023 estate Riesling remains on the fine lees for an extended period and is primarily aged in large wooden barrels. The result is a Riesling that, like no other, embodies the concept of a purist wine of origin. Grown on the calcareous soils of Westhofen, intense artisanal vineyard work and traditional winemaking in large wooden barrels make this a "genuine" Wittmann. The nose offers notes of citrus, grapefruit, and gooseberry. This dry estate Riesling displays profound, powerful Riesling fruit carried by an elegant acid structure.

Riesling Estate – VDP.GUTSWEIN

Estate wines like this Riesling Estate are the winery's calling card, which is why elegance and a refined expression of origin are particularly close to our hearts with these wines. The grapes are sourced from the estate's own vineyards, which are farmed biodynamically and maintained with artisanal care. They are ideal food companions, and not just in their first year.

Weingut Wittmann – how wine is made

The Riesling grapes grow on the gentle hills around the Wittmann winery in Westhofen, Rheinhessen. Biodynamic cultivation consists of three pillars: abstaining from synthetic chemical agents, activating soil life, and walking through the vineyard rows with mindfulness every day. "Every contact is a dialogue," as Philipp Wittmann puts it. This means intensive, year-round vineyard maintenance, low yields, and consistent manual grape selection form the foundation for the high quality of the wine.

After being harvested by hand, the grapes are gently pressed and the must is moved to the cellar via gravity without the use of pumps. There, it is given time to ferment spontaneously in traditional wooden barrels and remains on the fine lees for a long time, which gives the wine its structure. Finally, a great deal of tasting and blending takes place, as each wooden barrel contains the must from only a few vine rows, until the perfect balance is achieved. Winemaking is a matter of the mind, guided by the heart.
