Wittmann Winery – Organic Spätburgunder
The 2019 Spätburgunder from Wittmann Winery impresses with its fine spice and tremendous juiciness. The 2019 Spätburgunder Gutswein is aged on the fine lees for an extended period and matured primarily in large wooden barrels. This results in an elegant, classic Pinot with delicate aromas of red berries, subtle roasted notes, and a hint of vanilla. On the palate, the wine convinces with well-structured acidity, minerality, and a spicy, herbal finish. A still-youthful Pinot for special everyday moments and an ideal companion to grilled meat.
Spätburgunder – VDP.GUTSWEIN
The Gutsweine are the winery's calling card, which is why elegance and a refined sense of origin are particularly close to our hearts with these wines. The grapes come from estate-owned vineyards that are biodynamically farmed and tended by hand. They are ideal food companions, and not just in their first year.
Wittmann Winery – how wine is made
The Spätburgunder grapes grow on the gentle hills surrounding the Wittmann winery in Westhofen, Rheinhessen. The vineyards are cultivated biodynamically, which means abstaining from chemical-synthetic agents, activating soil life, and practicing mindfulness during daily walks through the vine rows. "Every contact is a dialogue," is how Philipp Wittmann puts it. This means intensive vineyard care throughout the year, low yields, and consistent hand-selection of the grapes form the foundation for the high quality of the wine.
After being harvested by hand, the grapes are gently pressed, and the must is transported into the cellar by gravity alone, without any pumping. There, it has time to ferment spontaneously in traditional wooden barrels and remains on the fine lees for a long time, which gives the wine its structure. Finally, there is a lot of tasting and blending, as each wooden barrel contains only the must from a few vine rows, until the perfect balance is found. Winemaking is a matter of the head, with heart.
