Enjoy the Karl May Estate Pinot Gris – [ORGANIC]
The Karl May Pinot Gris 2023 estate wine from Weingut Karl May in Rheinhessen is characterized by the scent of crisp pome fruits, such as yellow apple and Williams pear, fragrant apricot and sweet melon, which join in and lead to a herbaceous finish. A true all-rounder: dry, with a medium body and good acid balance, and moderate alcohol content.
The Karl May Pinot Gris is a true European with many names. In Switzerland it's called Malvoisie, in France Pinot Gris, and in Italy Pinot Grigio. Its fruitiness, paired with strong aromas and minerality, makes it a good food companion, perfect for German and international cuisine, such as vegetable appetizers, chicken breast, or pan-fried pike-perch.We recommend a large glass and a serving temperature of 8-10 degrees Celsius.
Winemaking – Karl May
The Pinot Gris from Weingut Karl May is a dry estate wine from Rheinhessen, from the winemaking community of Bechtheim, located on the edge of the Wonnegau. There, on sandy loess-loam soil with a south-southeast orientation, the grapes for Karl May's Pinot Gris grow in the Heligkreuz vineyard in organically managed vineyards.
To harvest ripe grapes in autumn, Fritz and Peter May begin in January with gentle pruning and early defoliation of the grape zone for optimal sun exposure, as well as yield reduction through green harvesting in early summer. Selective manual harvesting of the grapes often takes place in several passes. The path to the new winery is not far, where the grapes are gently processed. The mash is gently pressed and the must is spontaneously fermented, remains on the lees for a long time, and is aged in stainless steel tanks. A small portion (5%) is aged in used wooden barrels and later blended, which brings complexity, richness, and creaminess to the estate wine.
