Organic Pinot Gris Estate Wine from Weingut Karl May
The 2024 Pinot Gris from Weingut Karl May is a dry organic estate wine from Rheinhessen—juicy and uncomplicated. Featuring apple, pear, and apricot, with a medium body and fine acidity. A true all-rounder for every day.
Pinot Gris 2024 is a dry organic estate wine from the Karl May winery in Bechtheim, located on the edge of the Wonnegau region in Rheinhessen. It offers aromas of crisp pome fruit, tastes juicy and savory, and finishes with herbal notes. A wine with many names—Pinot Gris in France, Pinot Grigio in Italy—here it is a reliable companion throughout the week.
Yellow apple, Williams pear, fragrant apricot
On the nose, crisp pome fruit, yellow apple, and Williams pear, accompanied by fragrant apricot and sweet melon.
On the palate, the wine is dry, juicy, and savory, with a medium body, good acid balance, and moderate alcohol. With 12.5 percent alcohol and 4.3 grams of residual sugar, it remains pleasantly accessible, while the herbal-spicy finish leaves you wanting more. A Pinot Gris that doesn't need to prove anything and simply brings joy, sip by sip. Juicy, fruity, savory—that's how a good estate wine should drink.
We pair it with poultry, zander, and vegetables
Well-chilled at 8 to 10 degrees, this estate wine is a flexible companion throughout the entire meal, allowing the food to take center stage.
Its robust aromas and fine minerality suit both German and international cuisine, from vegetable appetizers to chicken breast or pan-fried zander. Serve it in a large glass and not too cold to let the full fruit profile open up. If you prefer something more powerful and influenced by wood, try the Pinot Gris Osthofen from Weingut Karl May, its "big brother" from the barrel.
Spontaneously fermented by Fritz and Peter May
The grapes grow in the Bechtheim "Heiligkreuz" vineyard site on sandy loess-loam soil with a south-southeast exposure, farmed organically.
Pinot Gris is a true European with many names—Malvoisie in Switzerland, Pinot Gris in France, Pinot Grigio in Italy. In the warm Wonnegau region, this grape variety is juicy and aromatic without ever becoming too heavy, which is precisely what makes it such a grateful food companion. You get a lot of wine here for an everyday price.
To ensure the grapes ripen, Fritz and Peter May prune early, leaf-thin the fruit zone for more sun, and reduce yields with a green harvest in early summer. The grapes are harvested selectively by hand, often in multiple passes. In the cellar, they are pressed gently, the must is spontaneously fermented, kept on the lees for a long time, and aged in stainless steel tanks.
A small portion of five percent is aged in used wooden barrels and blended in later, adding some complexity, fullness, and creaminess to the otherwise fresh estate wine without making it heavy. This gives you an everyday wine with an extra touch of depth. The May family has been making wine for seven generations since 1815, on around 35 hectares in Rheinhessen. You can find more in the Weingut Karl May collection and among our German white wines. Those who enjoy comparing Pinot Gris across different levels will find both estate and village wines side by side there.
