Fruity Spice with Ginger, Balsamic Vinegar, and Green Peppercorns

Königskind Cherry Chutney is a gourmet specialty made from 75% cherries, refined with ginger, a generous splash of balsamic vinegar, green peppercorns, and a pinch of cinnamon – handcrafted by Uwe König in his small artisanal factory in Oberberg. A spicy accompaniment for cheese, duck breast, and pork chops, with an intense color and complex aroma.

The Cherry Chutney from Königskind is a fruity and spicy specialty from the Oberberg region. With 75% cherries, gelling sugar, fresh ginger, a dash of balsamic vinegar, green peppercorns, and a pinch of cinnamon, only a few honest ingredients go into the jar – without artificial flavors, colorings, preservatives, or flavor enhancers. Uwe König cooks the chutney by hand from untreated fruit, allowing the cherries time to develop their full aroma.

Deeply Fruity, Spicy-Peppery, and with Warming Cinnamon

Once opened, the full aroma of ripe cherries rises – sweet, deep, and slightly tart, accompanied by warming cinnamon and a subtle ginger spice in the background. The color is a rich, dark ruby red with visible cherry pieces and green peppercorns shimmering between the fruits. The consistency is pleasantly thick, with whole fruit pieces that immediately evoke a late summer cherry tree when spooned.

On the tongue, the chutney begins with the full sweetness of cherry, then comes the balsamic vinegar with its soft acidity, followed by the spicy-exotic ginger, and finally the green peppercorns, which provide a delicate, aromatic tingle. The cinnamon runs through everything as a warm base note, without being overpowering. A complex chutney that goes far beyond the usual sweet and sour flavors and showcases cherry as a serious chutney fruit.

We love it with cheese, duck breast, and wild fowl

The Cherry Chutney is a gourmet companion for special moments. Especially lovely with a cheese board: with a matured Brie with a nutty body, a strong Comté, or a creamy goat cheese – the cherry sweetness enhances the cheese aromas, and the pepper adds excitement. One teaspoon on a cracker, a few roasted walnuts next to it, and you have an aperitif that will make guests take notice.

We also enjoy it with pan-fried meat and wild fowl. With a pink-roasted duck breast, a piece of wild boar, or a classic pork chop with boiled potatoes, the chutney is a firm companion – the cherry provides the sweetness, while the green peppercorns and balsamic vinegar provide the spicy counterpoint. It also highlights its flavors with baked feta, grilled plums, and warm baked cheese.

Our tip for the adventurous: Stir 1 tablespoon of cherry chutney into a sauce for venison loin or beef fillet – the fruit acidity enhances the meat flavors and gives the sauce depth without overpowering it. It also makes a good impression as a filling for a spicy-sweet wild pâté or as a glaze on a 1.5 kg ham roast. Königskind, handmade in Bergisches Land

The Königskind gourmet manufactory is the passion project of Uwe König and his wife Sabine. What began as a hobby in their home kitchen in 2005, the couple developed into a full-time business in 2014 due to the growing demand for their chutneys, mustards, and fruit spreads. To this day, all Königskind products are cooked in the kitchen below Ziegenbusch in Wiehl in the Bergisches Land, between Gummersbach and Nümbrecht – all by hand, in manageable quantities, with the care that only a small family manufactory can provide.

Uwe König uses only untreated fruits for his cherry chutney and consistently refrains from artificial flavors, colorings, preservatives, and flavor enhancers. This is the Königskind philosophy: a few honest ingredients that still taste like fruit and the season in which they were picked. In addition to the cherry chutney, we also carry mango chutney, orange chutney, plum chutney, redcurrant chutney, mustards, fruit spreads, and the legendary black walnuts from the same kitchen – all products of the same signature style.
