Königskind BBQ Sauce with Landbier is a sophisticated barbecue sauce made from ripe tomatoes, onions, and a generous splash of Bergisches Landbier, refined with homemade rhubarb syrup – handcrafted by Uwe König in his small gourmet manufactory in the Oberbergisch region. A well-balanced accompaniment for bratwurst, pork neck steak, ribeye, and grilled vegetables, with a subtle malty note from the beer.

The BBQ Sauce with Landbier from Königskind is a sophisticated barbecue sauce from the Oberbergisch region. Ripe tomatoes are cooked down with onions, sugar beet syrup, lime juice, soy sauce, mustard powder, and spices, then flavored with homemade rhubarb syrup from their own gourmet manufactory and a generous splash of Bergisches Landbier (contains alcohol). Uwe König consistently avoids artificial flavors, colorings, preservatives, or flavor enhancers.

Tomato-fruity, with a malty note and a fine rhubarb acidity

Once opened, the full aroma of cooked tomatoes rises – warm, slightly caramel-like, with a clear hint of a well-made Landbier in the background and the fruity clarity of the rhubarb syrup. The color is a deep, warm red with a shimmer of brown contributed by the beer. The consistency is pleasantly thick and spoonable, without being stiff, with fine pieces of onion that give the whole thing texture.

On the tongue, the sauce begins with the full sweetness of tomatoes, then comes the rhubarb acidity with its refreshing, slightly tart note, followed by the braised onions with their mature spice, and the Landbier, which adds a warm malty depth to the finish. The spices round everything off without being overpowering. Unlike industrial BBQ sauces with their dominant sweetness, the Königskind variant remains balanced, spicy, and mature – a sauce for people who want to accompany, not drown, their grilled food.

We like it with bratwurst, pork neck steak, and ribeye

The BBQ Sauce with Landbier is the crowning glory for your grilled meat. We prefer to use it with a hearty grilled bratwurst, a medium-rare pork neck steak, or a robust ribeye. The rhubarb acidity breaks down the fat, and the malty note of the Bergisches Landbier prolongs the meat flavor. The sauce also fully develops its aroma with spareribs, slow-cooked pulled pork, or a hearty grilled pork knuckle.

Our tip for barbecue evenings with friends: Brush 2 tablespoons of the sauce onto the meat as a glaze during the last 5 minutes of grilling – the sugars caramelize slightly and give the grilled food a beautiful color and an aromatic crust. As a marinade substitute, 3 tablespoons per 500 g of meat, marinated 2 hours before grilling, are sufficient to infuse the meat.

We also find it exciting as an accompaniment for vegetarian grilled food: with grilled halloumi, warm baked potatoes with sour cream, grilled eggplant, or a piece of grilled cheese, the sauce adds a spicy note that even meat enthusiasts will love. Königskind Manufactory with Homemade Bergisches Rhubarb Syrup

The Königskind gourmet manufactory is the passion project of Uwe König and his wife Sabine. What started as a hobby in their home kitchen in 2005, the couple expanded into a full-time business in 2014 due to growing demand for their sauces, chutneys, and mustards. To this day, all Königskind products are cooked in the kitchen under the "Ziegenbusch" (Goat Bush) in Wiehl – all by hand, in manageable quantities, with the care that only a small family manufactory can provide.

A special feature of the BBQ Sauce with Landbier is the homemade rhubarb syrup, which Uwe König prepares from his own rhubarb from the Oberbergisch region – an extra step, but one that makes all the difference compared to industrial competitors. The Bergisches Landbier comes from a regional brewery and gives the sauce its characteristic malty depth.
