Pfeffersack und Soehne – Black Pepper in Ceramic Jar – 70g

The Pfeffersack und Soehne Black Pepper in a black ceramic jar is a dried, whole pepper from India for the pepper mill or mortar. The Pfeffersack und Soehne Malabar pepper is universally applicable, as its aroma is harmonious and not too peppery.

Black pepper is the evergreen and all-rounder in all kitchens worldwide. It originally comes from the Indian Malabar Coast, the cradle of almost all pepper varieties. It is characterized by perfect small berries with an intensely fruity-spicy pepper aroma. Black pepper from Pfeffersack und Soehne comes from sustainable forestry.

Pfeffersack und Soehne – the spice manufacturer

The black pepper is carefully selected by the Pfeffersack und Soehne spice manufacturer in Koblenz and sourced in the country of origin before it ends up as pure whole grains in the black ceramic jar. This preserves and protects the essential oils and aromas. The pepper can be finely crushed in a mortar shortly before use or put into a good pepper mill and sprinkled over dishes, in soups or stews you can also put the whole peppercorns with other spices and herbs into a tea bag and remove them whole at the end of the cooking time.

India – where black pepper grows

Until the time when the Kingdom of Spain commissioned the young, committed navigator Christopher Columbus on behalf of the Crown to find a sea route to India and the East Pacific, there was a trade monopoly of Arabs and Venetians on exotic spices such as pepper, nutmeg or vanilla. Even though pepper was already known in Europe in the Hellenistic age (approx. 330 BC), this monopoly lasted until the 15th century.

High tariffs and trade markups by Arab merchants made these exotic spices almost unaffordable for Europeans. All deliveries via caravan routes across the Eurasian mainland and the sea route through the Red Sea were controlled by the Arabs at that time.

Christopher Columbus discovered America, but it was his fellow navigator Vasco da Gama who finally discovered the sea route to India. During his expeditions, he explored the African coast, which served as his orientation. In addition to India, he discovered the Moluccas, also known as the Spice Islands.

Due to the high price of pepper, it was considered a status symbol that only the wealthy could afford. The higher the price climbed, the more glorious the pepper became and, alongside nutmeg and cloves, was a sign of wealth and luxury in the Middle Ages.
