The Sparkling Wine of the Year grows in the Dalsheimer Bürgel
The 2015 Blanc de Blancs Réserve Extra Brut is the Pinot Blanc sparkling wine that the Vinum Weinguide 2025 awarded 94 points and named Sparkling Wine of the Year. It is not a single-vineyard sparkling wine, but rather a blend from several parcels.
Blanc de Blancs Réserve Extra Brut 2015 is the excellent Réserve sparkling wine from the Raumland sparkling wine house in Flörsheim-Dalsheim, crafted from 100 percent Pinot Blanc. With this, the Raumland Blanc de Blancs holds the title that German sparkling wine producers have been vying for for years. The grapes grow predominantly in parcels of the Dalsheimer Bürgel, supplemented by calcareous soils from the surrounding area.
Quince, nectarine, and a sweet-tart grapefruit
The Réserve Extra Brut offers scents of ripe quince, juicy nectarine, and the sweet-tart zest of a pink grapefruit, just like the kind you peel in late summer.
Over 90 months on the lees add a second layer where brioche, brown butter, and toasted almonds come together. On the palate, 7.1 grams of acidity per liter maintain the fruit, while the dosage, at 3.5 grams per liter, remains so restrained that there is no hint of sweetness. It is full-bodied, powerful, and fine-beaded in the glass, and the finish lingers without ever becoming broad.
With guinea fowl and aged mountain cheese
An Extra Brut with this structure demands a set table, not a quick toast while standing.
Guinea fowl from the oven suits it well, as does sweetbread in a light sauce or an aged mountain cheese, the salt of which truly awakens the quince notes. It unfolds at 9 to 11 degrees Celsius, in a bulbous white wine glass rather than a narrow flute, because the aging aromas need the space that this sparkling wine requires.
It is almost too good to be an aperitif, but as the prelude to a long meal, it sets exactly the tone that a special evening deserves.
Stainless steel and barrique, carefully balanced
Volker Raumland founded his sparkling wine house in 1984 in Flörsheim-Dalsheim and today farms 14 hectares organically in Rheinhessen and the Palatinate. His daughters Katharina and Marie-Luise joined the business in 2019 and have been running the house since December 2025.
The year 2015 brought a warm summer and an early, healthy harvest, which gave the base wines intensity and spice. It is precisely this substance that a sparkling wine needs to survive more than seven years in the cellar without growing tired.
For this vintage, 81 percent of the base wines were aged in stainless steel and 19 percent in barrique, which gives the Pinot Blanc structure without making it taste of wood. The whole grapes were pressed, and it was riddled and disgorged by hand; it was released from the lees in February 2024. It was bottled with 12 percent alcohol.
The Vinum Weinguide 2025 placed it at the top of all tasted sparkling wines with 94 points, and it also achieved a third place at the German Sparkling Wine Awards 2025. Quite an achievement. Unlike the single-vineyard sparkling wine from the Dalsheimer Bürgel, this vintage thrives on the interplay of several parcels.
