Sparkling grape juice from white Bacchus
Zerozzante Cuvée No.1 is a non-alcoholic sparkling grape juice made from white Bacchus grapes, cold-pressed and then carbonated. It is therefore not a dealcoholized sparkling wine, but a juice that has never undergone fermentation at all.
Zerozzante Cuvée No.1 white grapes is the non-alcoholic fruit frizzante from the Raumland sparkling wine house in Flörsheim-Dalsheim, pressed from 100 percent Bacchus. Volker Raumland originally developed it for his two daughters so that no one at the family table would have to sit with a plain juice spritzer. The name Zerozzante already contains the "zero" in its alcohol content.
Fresh grapes, grapefruit and light stone fruit
The sparkling grape juice appears straw-yellow in the glass and smells of freshly harvested grapes, grapefruit and light stone fruit.
On the palate, it is juicy and clearly sweet with fruit, but the crisp acidity of the Bacchus grape keeps it upright and prevents the sweetness from becoming cloying. Over this lie the floral notes that this grape variety inherently possesses. Fruity, lively and light-footed, it stands out with a fine perlage and a finish reminiscent of freshly pressed must.
The variety itself is a Rhenish new breed from 1933, a cross of Silvaner, Riesling and Müller-Thurgau, and named after the Roman god of wine. It is this very variety that now provides a drink completely without alcohol.
A glass in the middle of the workday
Anyone who wants to toast at midday and still has to work in the afternoon will find this to be the perfect glass, allowing for both without any complications.
Fried fish and poultry go well with it, as do light meats and fruity desserts made from yellow fruits. Drunk solo, it keeps the group together late into the evening without anyone having to ask why. It should be served well-chilled at 6 to 8 degrees in a white wine glass, as its fruit tends to be hidden beneath the carbonation in a narrow flute.
Once opened, the 750 ml bottle will last for about three days in the refrigerator, after which the perlage visibly fades. On a set table, it stands in the same heavy bottle shape as the sparkling wine next to it, which makes the difference pleasantly unobtrusive. Other sparkling non-alcoholic drinks can be found right next to it on our shelf.
Cold-pressed and never heated
The Bacchus grapes come from their own vineyards and from friendly winemakers in the region; the juice pressed for the frizzante is the "taille" (second pressing), which does not go into the house's grand vintage sparkling wines. Only pristine fruit goes into the press, because without pasteurization, this process does not forgive a single bruised berry.
Volker Raumland deliberately avoids any heating because, although heat makes the juice more durable, it noticeably flattens the aroma. Instead, the strongly chilled grape juice is cold-sterile bottled and carbonated. In addition to this, there are only 30 milligrams of vitamin C per liter on the ingredient list.
Volker founded his sparkling wine house in 1984 in Rheinhessen and in 2020 became the first dedicated sparkling wine producer to be accepted into the VDP, while his daughters Katharina and Marie-Luise have been working in the company since 2019.
