Viani – San Marzano Tomatoes – in their own juice

Viani's San Marzano tomatoes are delicious, sun-ripened, whole peeled tomatoes, Pomodori Pelati, in their own juice. The very good tomato from the foot of Mount Vesuvius, il pomodoro più buono del Vesuvio, has always belonged here in Campania. Since 1996, the San Marzano tomato from the Agro Sarnese Nocerino region in the province of Naples has been a protected designation of origin (DOP). The oblong tomato has firm flesh with few seeds and a thick skin, which, as with these canned tomatoes, peels wonderfully. You can cut the San Marzano tomatoes into pieces and put them on pizza, or use them whole, just as they are in the can, as a base for a goulash or a ratatouille. You can make a sauce or a soup from them and refine them with your favorite ingredients. They taste fruity and sweet with a certain acidity, reminiscent of the Italian sun.

San Marzano – the special tomato

Just a few years ago, the San Marzano tomato was threatened with extinction because it was hardly cultivated anymore. In the meantime, it is experiencing a renaissance and is thriving again, thanks to the commitment of Slow Food, on the fertile volcanic soils at the foot of Vesuvius. This special terroir and a mild climate influenced by the sea shape its unique, unmistakable aromatic taste, which only develops in the can. For us, it's the most beautiful way to capture summer.
