Rubus Gin by Panama Papers with Raspberry and Juniper

The Rubus Gin from Faude feine Brände is a berry-forward German gin, distilled for the bartenders at Panama Papers, where raspberries meet juniper. Berry-forward, mild, complex – a gin for the cocktail menu, with 42% ABV and made entirely from real fruit.

Rubus Gin is a raspberry-focused gin that master distiller Florian Faude produces in the Kaiserstuhl region for the bar brand Panama Papers. Its name alludes to Rubus, the botanical genus of raspberries and blackberries. Raspberries and gooseberries from the Kaiserstuhl meet juniper and 10 botanicals.

Raspberry, wild berry, and a hint of orange blossom

Even from the bottle, Rubus Gin exudes a berry aroma of ripe raspberry, dark wild berries, and sweet orange blossom.

On the palate, the gin is mild yet complex—juniper and coriander seeds, fragrant lavender, and cardamom emerge, accompanied by orange and grapefruit peel and a subtle gooseberry acidity. Berry-forward, spicy, fresh—carried by real fruit instead of flavoring.

There are many berry gins, but most taste like syrup. Florian takes the path of using the whole fruit: the extract of 200 g of raspberries per bottle gives Rubus Gin its depth, without the need for a single drop of added flavoring.

In a Gin & Tonic with fresh raspberries

Neat over ice or as a Gin & Tonic, Rubus Gin brings the berry summer into the glass, all year round.

In a Gin & Tonic with a few fresh raspberries and a light tonic that doesn’t overpower the fruit, it shows off its berry side. Neat on the rocks, it carries you through the summer; neat and warm, it carries you through the winter. It holds its own in a berry spritz with sparkling wine or over vanilla ice cream, and in the bar, it serves as the base for fruity summer cocktails. Those who prefer citrusy notes should also try the Citris Gin, and raspberry fans can reach for the clear Raspberry Eau de Vie.

Two bartenders, one distiller, one berry gin

Rubus Gin was developed in 2016 by bartenders Alexander Mayer and Leopold Langer with Florian Faude—a gin by bartenders for the bar.

Alexander mixes at One Trick Pony in Freiburg, Leopold runs the Schwarz Weiß Bar in Ludwigsburg; berry gins already existed, but neither of them felt they tasted natural enough. Florian, known in the Kaiserstuhl for his experimental spirit, was the third member of the trio. For every bottle, he distills the extract of 200 g of raspberries, a massive amount.

“Every distillate begins at the tree, the bush, or in the field—if you put something good in, you get something good out,” says Florian. The raspberries and gooseberries grow right on his doorstep, and the citrus fruits come from Southern Italy. Florian took over his parents' distillery in 2006 and rebuilt it in 2017; the gin is bottled at 42% ABV in 0.5-liter bottles. You can find more spirits from Faude feine Brände here.

Why it becomes slightly cloudy when chilled

Served as a Gin & Tonic with fresh raspberries or a gooseberry on a skewer, Rubus Gin hits the glass. If you chill the gin, it may become slightly cloudy—this is caused solely by the essential oils, a completely natural process. A berry-strong gin for long summer evenings and curious connoisseurs.
