Chardonnay Leithaberg DAC from Weingut Heinrich
The Gernot Heinrich Chardonnay Leithaberg 2022 is a mineral, charming organic white wine from the eastern slopes of the Leitha Mountains, so to speak from the other side of Lake Neusiedl, where the soils are rich in limestone and slate. It is precisely this austerity, this salinity, that makes this Chardonnay so appealing, allowing the yellow-fleshed fruit notes, the buttery taste of freshly baked Madeleines, and the smokiness to recede into the background. A wine that will hardly find its equal in its price range, one that can ripen, that needs time to show, with plenty of air in a large glass, how filigree can work together with substance.
Heike and Gernot Heinrich – Winemaking
The Chardonnay grapes, hand-picked in mid-September 2022, come from renowned vineyards such as Spiegel, Kirchberg or Alter Berg, as well as Edelgraben and Zwergsbreiten with fossil-rich calcareous sandstone and mica schist soils. Heike and Gernot Heinrich cultivate the vineyards of Weingut Heinrich organically-biologically or biodynamically, with great care and attention to detail. After harvesting, the grapes remain on the mash for a few hours, then gently pressed and spontaneously fermented. The Chardonnay Leithaberg underwent a natural malolactic fermentation, in which the more aggressive malic acid is converted into milder lactic acid. This brings typical notes and, above all, a pleasant creaminess to the wine, which was allowed to mature for a full 7 months on its natural lees in large oak barrels before being bottled at the end of April 2023.
