Three Vintages of Biodynamic Vitality
The Gernot Heinrich Graue Freyheit Vertical 2020–2022 combines three extraordinary vintages of an iconic natural wine in an exclusive compilation. Each vintage – 2020, 2021, and 2022 – tells the story of its growing season in its own unique way. Together, they reflect the signature of Gernot and Heike Heinrich, who for years have stood for uncompromising biodynamic winemaking and pure expressiveness in Burgenland.
Gernot Heinrich Graue Freyheit Vertical 2020–2022
- Three vintages, one character: A sensory journey through three climatically distinct years – shaped by origin, nature, and time.
- Craft & Origin: Grapes from biodynamic cultivation, spontaneously fermented and bottled unfiltered.
- Wine with Soul: Each vintage interprets the principle of "Graue Freyheit" in its own way – between structure, finesse, and lively texture.
The Idea of "Graue Freyheit"
"Graue Freyheit" at Weingut Heinrich stands for experimental spirit, openness, and the conscious letting go of conventions. This natural wine from Austria is a cuvée of white and red grapes – mostly Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, and small proportions of Neuburger or Muskateller. The Pinot Gris grows on Joiser Hackelsberg, a northwest-facing slope with slate and quartz slate soils, away from Lake Neusiedl. Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc primarily come from the top sites of Breitenbrunner Edelgraben and Windener Alter Berg, i.e., from limestone and slate-rich eastern slopes of the Leitha Mountains in Austrian Burgenland. The vineyards are cultivated organically-biologically and biodynamically. The skin contact time gives it structure, color, and depth. Aged in amphorae and wooden barrels, the unfiltered wine remains lively, unadulterated, and full of energy – an honest expression of the soil and the people who shape it.
The Vertical – Three Vintages in Comparison
With the 2020–2022 vertical, the subtle differences between the vintages can be experienced:
- 2020 – a year of balance and fine acid structure, characterized by clarity and mineral tension.
- 2021 – cool, precise, and complex, with floral notes and a slightly salty freshness on the finish.
- 2022 – warm and powerful, with ripe fruit, richness, and lively texture – a sensual expression of freedom.
Tasted together, a fascinating picture unfolds: three wines, three perspectives – a shared understanding of origin, vitality, and freedom in the glass.
