Roter Traminer Freyheit 2021 – Organic Wine by Gernot Heinrich

The Roter Traminer Freyheit 2021 by Gernot Heinrich, which owes its name to the 100% Roter Traminer grape content, is an unfiltered, cloudy natural wine. Macerated, differently colored, cloudy with yeast. For friends of diversity who want to embrace newly strengthened, traditional positions. This wine by Gernot Heinrich is the result of his endeavor to help old traditional grape varieties experience a renaissance. The Roter Traminer Freyheit is an aromatic, fragrant, complex food companion with a creamy texture and thirst-quenching bitterness.

In 2012, during a visit to Burgenland at the winery of Heike and Gernot Heinrich, we had the opportunity to taste the "very first" Roter Traminer Freyheit directly from the barrel. It was an impressive experience, one that was lasting and encouraged us to dive into the world of macerated orange wines. Those who, like me, enjoy Traminer, preferably dry, will also be captivated by this Roter Traminer. I remember it as if it were yesterday when Gernot asked me: "And what do you smell?" Expressing what I perceived took some courage, because in addition to yellow roses and nutmeg, I smelled crispy roasted chicken skin. Yes, that's how it was!

The Roter Traminer Freyheit 2021 smells like a Pale Ale: of hops and again yellow roses, of exotic fruits and subtly bitter Rooibos tea. Yet, despite all its fragrance, it is dry on the palate, which is wonderful. This Orange Wine is powerful and graceful at the same time, showing substantial extravagance and lingering long on the palate. And it still pairs perfectly with roasted chicken from the oven.

Heike and Gernot Heinrich say this about their red Traminer Freyheit: "Unbound, intense, and with healthy self-irony, the 2021 Roter Traminer Freyheit possesses a straightforwardness characterized by its charming curves. Exotic, yet compact fruit opulence alongside woodland earthiness."

Gernot Heinrich – Winemaking

The Roter Traminer grows on the eastern slope of Kollern in Breitenbrunn, deeply rooted in the fossil-rich soil characterized by eroded mica schist and limestone. The vineyards are in conversion to biodynamic farming.

The grapes, hand-picked at the beginning of September 2021, were allowed to ferment spontaneously and remained on the skins with their stems for 14 days before being gently pressed in a basket press. The Roter Traminer Freyheit underwent a natural malolactic fermentation (BSA), in which the more aggressive malic acid is converted into milder lactic acid. This brings typical notes and, above all, a pleasant creaminess to the wine, which was allowed to mature for 6 months on its natural lees in amphora before being bottled unfiltered and without added sulfur at the end of March 2022. Please shake before enjoying!
