Muscat Freyheit 2019 – Natural Wine from Gernot Heinrich from Austria
The Heinrich Muscat Freyheit 2019 from the Gernot Heinrich winery, which owes its name to the 80% Muscat Ottonel content, is an unfiltered natural wine in a clay bottle. Here, the winemaker simply wanted to be free, to try something new, without being bound by conventions. The result is an incredibly fragrant, multi-layered food companion with a creamy texture and thirst-quenching bitterness. A whole carpet of aromas floods the nose: tropical fruits such as kumquats and Sharon fruit, sweet and tart grapefruit, as well as vegetal notes of fresh coriander, wheatgrass and fennel seeds. On the palate, it is not overwhelming, shows creaminess and actually makes you want the next sip.
Heinrich – Winemaking with Respect
In the Muscat Freyheit, Muscat Ottonel and Pinot Blanc come together. The Muscat Ottonel grows on sandy-gravelly loamy sedimentary soil on the south slope of the Parndorf Plateau. The Pinot Blanc mostly comes from the top sites Breitenbrunner Edelgraben and Windener Alter Berg, i.e., from the limestone and slate-rich eastern slopes of the Leitha Mountains. The vineyards are in conversion to biodynamic cultivation.
The grapes, hand-picked from late August to early September 2019, were allowed to ferment spontaneously and were left on the mash for 12 days before being gently pressed in a basket press. The Muscat Freyheit underwent a natural malolactic fermentation, in which the more aggressive malic acid is converted into milder lactic acid. This brings typical notes and, above all, a pleasant creaminess to the wine, which was allowed to mature for 13 months on its natural lees in the amphora before being bottled unfiltered and without added sulfur at the end of November 2020. Please shake before enjoying!
