Pinot Freyheit 2019 – Natural Wine from Heike and Gernot Heinrich
The Gernot Heinrich Pinot Freyheit 2019 is an organic red wine, grown on limestone-rich soils in the cool forest-edge proximity of the Leitha Mountains, partly from the Edelgraben vineyard with mica slate subsoil, on the edge of Lake Neusiedl in the Austrian Burgenland.
The Pinot Freyheit from Weingut Gernot Heinrich is a true natural wine produced in very small quantities. Dark berry fruit, such as black cherry, blackberry, and sloe, meets herbs and moss, bacon, and slate spice. The slender Pinot Freyheit is juicy and enjoyable with animating acidity and exciting mineral facets.
Gernot Heinrich says this about his Pinot: "Pinot Freyheit is at home in many worlds. It pays homage to the berry fruit with its brightly blushing countenance. It reveres the mica slate from which it originates and which fortifies it. It stretches towards the sun and celebrates the air-filled space where the beauty of idleness has found a protected home. It is as demanding as it is frugal, but always accompanied by a touch of elegance."
Heike and Gernot Heinrich – Winemaking
The Pinot Noir grapes, hand-picked from late August to early September 2019, come from stony vineyards in the Leitha Mountains. Heike and Gernot Heinrich cultivate the vineyards organically-biologically or biodynamically, with much manual labor and care. After harvesting, the grapes remain on the mash for two weeks with one-third whole clusters, then gently pressed in a basket press and spontaneously fermented. The Pinot Noir matured for 17 months on its natural lees in amphorae before being bottled in early March 2021.
