The 2015 Grand Cuvée Sekt from the Karl May winery is an organic Winzersekt from Rheinhessen, a cuvée of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay produced via traditional bottle fermentation. Seven years on the lees, zero dosage, vegan. A sparkling wine with depth and a fine perlage.
Grand Cuvée Sekt 2015 is an organic Winzersekt from the Karl May winery in Osthofen, Rheinhessen, crafted as a cuvée of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. It matured through traditional bottle fermentation for seven years on the lees and is bottled with no dosage at all. A sparkling wine with character that has taken its time, and it shows in the glass.
Smoky, nutty, a hint of bread crust
On the nose, smoky and nutty notes, accompanied by ripe yellow fruits and a touch of tobacco and bread crust—a bouquet that tells the story of long maturation.
On the palate, the Sekt is profound, creamy, and complex, carried by a fine perlage and a subtle impression of sweetness, even though it contains no dosage. These hints of extract sweetness arise solely from the long maturation, not from added sugar.
This is how you taste what seven years of patience on the lees does for a sparkling wine. This is classic bottle fermentation, but crafted by a small family winery from Rheinhessen. Smoky, nutty, and profound—it is rare to find such bubbles from German lands.
An aperitif and companion for fine dining
Well-chilled at 6 to 8 degrees and served in a large glass, the Sekt unfolds its full aroma; if it's too cold, you lose its depth.
It works wonderfully as an aperitif, accompanies fine dishes as well as special occasions, and makes for a sophisticated gift.
Due to its nutty, mature nature, it also pairs with dishes that a lighter sparkling wine would struggle with, such as poultry with a creamy sauce or aged hard cheese. Serve it in a white wine glass instead of a narrow flute to give its aromatics space to breathe. Seven years of patience with Fritz and Peter May
The grapes are organically farmed, carefully hand-harvested, and gently processed in the cellar.
The first fermentation takes place partly in tonneaux, the second classically in the bottle, known as méthode traditionnelle. The Sekt then rests for a full seven years on the lees before being disgorged and bottled with zero dosage. The longer a Sekt stays on the lees, the finer and more persistent its perlage in the glass.
Fritz and Peter May produce organic and vegan-certified wines in Osthofen. The family has been making wine for seven generations since 1815, and this Sekt shows how beautifully tradition and patience go hand in hand. You can find more in the Karl May winery assortment and under our wines. A Sekt for special moments—this is how Winzersekt is done.
