Sardines with Turmeric & Ginger are flavored sardines from the Conserverie La Perle des Dieux in Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie in the Vendée, on the French Atlantic coast south of Brittany. Turmeric provides color and earthy warmth, while ginger and black pepper add freshness and a subtle heat.

Golden, warm, with a delicate spice

The turmeric stains the fish a golden yellow and provides an earthy, warm undertone, while the ginger adds a sharp freshness and the pepper a mild heat.

The mild sardine readily absorbs the spices, and the olive oil softens them. Warm, spicy, fresh – a sardine that tastes of distant cuisines.

With rice, in a salad, on bread

The warm spiciness is magnificent in Far Eastern cuisine: over rice, in a vegetable bowl, or simply on bread.

We like to serve it over basmati rice with a little yogurt and cilantro, accompanied by a cool Gewürztraminer or ginger tea. It also makes a great addition to an antipasti platter. You can find a wide selection of other sardines in olive oil in our shop.

A sardine cannery with art on the tin

La Perle des Dieux is arguably the most feminine cannery in the industry – founded in 2005 by Claudie Vardelle and Philippe Gendreau in the Vendée.

Philippe's family has been canning fish for four generations; Claudie brought a sense of aesthetics and had artists design the lids. The fish is caught off the coast of Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie, cleaned by hand, and packed while fresh. The company is famous for its vintage sardines from La Perle des Dieux; those who enjoy spicy recipes will also find the sardines with Andaliman pepper.
