Green Tea Nana Mint by Kusmi Tea, Moroccan Tea Tradition in a Cup

Green Tea Nana Mint is a Chinese Gunpowder green tea, refined with Nana mint – the aromatic Moroccan mint that characterizes the typical mint tea of desert peoples in Tuareg tea houses. Organic quality, real mint leaves plus natural mint aroma. Loose in a 100g tin. Refreshing, clear, a tea for after dinner.

Green Tea Nana Mint by Kusmi Tea is the Parisian interpretation of Moroccan mint tea. The base is Chinese Gunpowder green tea from Zhejiang province, whose leaves are rolled into small dark pearls and release a strong, slightly smoky aroma when brewed. This is combined with real mint leaves and natural mint aroma – Nana mint, a strong spearmint variety used in North Africa and the Middle East for traditional mint tea.

Light green infusion, clear and menthol-fresh

As soon as you open the tin, it becomes fresh: the strong, slightly smoky scent of Gunpowder green tea meets the lively, almost ethereal Nana mint. The tea leaves are rolled into small, dark green balls (hence the name Gunpowder), with light green, dried mint leaves scattered between them like confetti.

In the cup, Nana mint tea has a light, luminous green-yellow color. The first sip is clear, the mint immediately takes the lead – menthol, lively, with that natural sweetness that only real Nana mint brings. Beneath it, the Gunpowder with its tart, full-bodied depth that gives the mint its hold. A tea that opens the palate instead of weighing it down, that cools and refreshes: almost like a sip from a Moroccan fountain gurgling in the heat of the Medina.

After dinner or with couscous and dates

Green Tea Nana Mint is the classic accompaniment after dinner, especially after oriental-North African dishes. It goes well with lamb couscous, couscous salad with mint and pomegranate, hummus and falafel, baklava and Moroccan sweets. Add a fresh date, as Moroccan tradition dictates – and the gentle sweetness of the date blends perfectly with the tart minty tip.

Traditionally, Moroccan mint tea is drunk very hot and lightly sweetened – in small glasses, poured from a tall teapot so that the tea foams. However, you can also prepare it in the classic European way: pure, without sugar. The tea is also a delight as iced tea in summer with ice cubes and fresh mint leaves. For a pot, you need about 2 tablespoons of loose tea per liter, steeped with 80°C hot water, for 3 to 4 minutes.

In the Kusmi green tea assortment, Nana mint tea is the most refreshing option – it gets more floral with Green Tea Rose, and spicier with Ginger Lemon. For comparison with peppermint: Nana mint has a milder, sweeter aroma than peppermint and less menthol – but more depth.

The Gunpowder Tradition and the Kusmi Touch

Gunpowder green tea originally comes from the Chinese province of Zhejiang. After harvesting, the tea leaves are dried before being rolled into small, dense balls that resemble gunpowder – hence the English name. When brewed, they unfurl and release their characteristic, slightly smoky aroma. This Gunpowder has traditionally been the basis of Moroccan mint tea since the desert peoples of the Sahara discovered it on caravan routes and integrated it into their tea houses.

The story of Kusmi Tea begins in 1867 in St. Petersburg, where Pavel Mikhailovich Kousmichoff opens his own tea house. After the Russian Revolution, the family flees to Paris in 1917. Since 2017, almost all teas are organically grown, filled in the modern manufactory in Le Havre, in the iconic round metal tins. In our Kusmi Tea collection, you will find an overview of all blends.
