The Lovely Morning by Kusmi Tea is an organic green tea featuring yerba mate and a citrus trio of grapefruit, lemon, and orange. This blend comes from the French tea house Kusmi Tea, which has its roots in Saint Petersburg in 1867 and has been based in Paris since 1917. The recipe is rounded off with guarana and marigold petals. A green tea containing theine, it presents a bright, translucent yellow-green in the cup and releases a zesty citrus aroma. All ingredients are organically grown (control body FR-BIO-01).

Even when opening the tin, the scent is bright: grapefruit sets the tone, flanked by lemon and orange, with the grassy notes of mate and the clean freshness of green tea in the background. The loose leaves are a mixture of light green tea leaves and slightly coarser, broken mate pieces. Bright orange marigold petals shine through the mix. A vibrant, non-uniform leaf structure that looks like morning in a tin.

In the cup, Lovely Morning displays a bright yellow-green, as translucent as a young white wine. The first sip is zesty: the grapefruit leads with its characteristically slight bitter edge, the lemon provides acidity, and the orange adds soft sweetness.

The mate adds a herbal depth reminiscent of freshly cut grass, while the green tea carries the entire profile with its clear freshness. Three notes take turns in the finish: the citrus freshness in the first moment, the grassy mate in the middle, and the green tea as a calm final chord.

How do I prepare Lovely Morning correctly?

The short answer: 80 °C (176 °F) water, let steep for 3 to 4 minutes. For a pot, use about two tablespoons of loose tea per liter. You should not use boiling water, as green tea leaves release tannins at 100 °C, which will make the blend bitter.

If you don't have a kettle with temperature control: bring the water to a boil, leave the lid off, and let it cool for about five minutes—this should bring it to approximately 80 °C.

The tea is best enjoyed pure and without sugar. The citrus fruits provide enough natural aroma that no sweetness is missing. An extra squeeze of fresh lemon juice can further enhance the grapefruit edge. In the summer, this infusion makes a great iced tea: brew it twice as strong, pour over ice cubes, and serve with a slice of grapefruit or orange.

There are three sources of theine in this blend: the green tea, the yerba mate leaves, and the guarana. Theine is released from the infusion more slowly than caffeine in coffee because it is bound to tannins in the tea. If you are sensitive to caffeine, steep the tea for a shorter time (1–2 minutes) or switch to a pure rooibos tea like Rooibos Vanille.

Kusmi Tea, the Parisian tea house with Russian roots

The history of Kusmi Tea begins in 1867 in Saint Petersburg, where Pavel Mikhailovich Kousmichoff opened his own tea house. Over the decades, the house grew into an international tea trading empire, supplying, among others, the Russian Tsar's court. In 1917, the revolution forced the family to flee, and they settled in Paris. There, the house continues to live on today as an independent manufacturer—not as a museum, but as an active recipe laboratory that regularly develops new blends.

Since 2003, Kusmi Tea has been part of the Orebi family, who have consistently modernized the house: old classics like Anastasia and Prince Wladimir were carefully refined, and new lines like the mate-based morning teas were added. Since 2017, almost all blends have been organically grown. The factory is located in Le Havre on the Atlantic coast, from where the teas are filled into the iconic round metal tins and shipped worldwide.

Lovely Morning is one of the younger Kusmi creations. It showcases the modern face of the house: open to new ingredients like yerba mate and guarana, but composed with the accustomed Kusmi craftsmanship. The blend has been an integral part of the organic line since its introduction and is one of the best-selling morning teas in the assortment.
