Tchai of the Tiger by Kusmi Tea, spicy organic chai with WWF tiger protection

Tchai of the Tiger is a strong, spicy organic chai based on Indian black tea from the Thiashola garden in the Nilgiri Mountains. With ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, black and pink pepper. Note: contains liquorice - excessive consumption should be avoided if you have high blood pressure. Loose in a 100g tin, organically grown. For every tin sold, Kusmi Tea donates 1 Euro to the WWF Tx2 project for the protection of wild tigers.

The Tchai of the Tiger from Kusmi Tea is the in-house interpretation of Indian chai, combined with a story that goes beyond the cup. The base is an organic black tea from the Thiashola Garden in the Nilgiri District in Southwest India, located at an altitude of 2000 meters - one of the world's most renowned ethically managed tea gardens and also home to WWF protected tigers.

Added to this is the classic chai spice blend: ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, black and pink pepper, supplemented with liquorice and chicory. For every tin sold, 1 Euro goes to the WWF Tx2 project for the protection of wild tigers.

Important note: The tea contains liquorice. People with high blood pressure should avoid excessive consumption.

Deep dark infusion, spicy-strong with a slight peppery kick

As soon as you open the tin, a powerful spice bouquet unfolds: warming cinnamon meets fresh ginger, cardamom opens up the middle, and the two types of pepper add the piquant accents. Visible are the dark black tea leaves, interspersed with light ginger pieces, small cinnamon stick splinters, dark peppercorns and the characteristic pink peppercorns – a tin like a spice market.

In the cup, the Tchai of the Tiger shows a deep mahogany red. The first sip is full-bodied and strong, the malty Assam depth of the Indian black tea forms the foundation, ginger brings the warming spiciness. Cardamom gives depth and that delicate lemon note, cinnamon warms, and the two peppers give a surprising piquant kick on the finish. The liquorice root rounds everything off with natural sweetness – strong, spicy, balanced.

In the cold season with milk froth or as a classic chai latte

The Tchai of the Tiger is the classic winter and autumn tea for all those who love spices. Drunk plain, it goes well with spicy curries, Indian lentil dishes, paneer cheese or oriental spiced cake. In winter, it accompanies pumpkin soup, roast with red cabbage and baked apple desserts.

However, its real home game is as a chai latte. To do this, brew the tea as usual, let it steep for a long time, then mix it with frothed milk (or oat, almond, soy milk) in equal parts, sweeten with a spoonful of honey or agave syrup and sprinkle with a pinch of cinnamon. The result: a spicy, creamy morning tea that rivals any café chai latte.

For a pot, you need about 2 tablespoons of loose tea per liter, infused with 90°C hot water, steeping time 5 minutes. If you want to increase the spiciness, let the tea steep longer or add a fresh ginger slice.

If you are looking for more spiced blends in the Kusmi range, the Prince Wladimir offers a Russian variant with orange, clove and vanilla, and the Label Impérial a green tea spice blend according to Russian winter tradition. The Tchai of the Tiger is the strongest, most distinctly Indian-influenced.

Thiashola, Nilgiri and WWF commitment

The Thiashola Garden, from which the base black tea originates, is located in the Nilgiri Mountains in the state of Tamil Nadu in Southwest India, at an altitude of 2000 meters. The region is known for its ethical and organic tea cultivation – and for its biodiversity: elephants, panthers, monkeys and more than 40 bird species live here, as do the WWF-protected tigers.

For many years, Kusmi Tea has supported the WWF Tx2 project, which aims to double the number of wild tigers by 2022 (the Chinese Year of the Tiger) compared to 2010. For every tin of Tchai of the Tiger sold, the company donates 1 Euro to this project.

The story of Kusmi Tea begins in 1867 in St. Petersburg, where 21-year-old Pavel Mikhailovich Kousmichoff opened his own tea house. After the Russian Revolution, the family fled to Paris in 1917. Since 2017, almost all teas have been organically grown, bottled in the manufactory in Le Havre. In our Kusmi Tea collection, you will find an overview of all blends.
