Berger Confiserie's Organic Hazelnuts in Milk Chocolate are whole hazelnuts coated in tender organic milk chocolate and Christmas spices. 100 g of the crunchy balls sit in a copper-orange box with a window, ready for snacking and gifting.

Organic Hazelnuts in Milk Chocolate are chocolate-coated nuts from Berger Confiserie in Lofer, in which every hazelnut lies beneath a coating of milk chocolate, honey and cocoa. Almost a third of the weight is nuts, and the spices give the mix the scent of Christmas baking.

Hazelnuts in chocolate with a Christmas scent

In these hazelnuts in chocolate, tender milk chocolate meets the firm bite of a whole, crunchy nut, and together they taste of Advent. The balls are big enough that you take them one at a time, and small enough that you rarely stop at one.

The coating is mild and creamy, the hazelnut beneath it nutty and round. The spices lay a warm scent over it that recalls gingerbread and speculoos. Honey, sugar and gum arabic hold the layers together, and a little cocoa powder gives the coating depth.

Berger does not reveal exactly which spices are involved, but the scent when you open the box clearly belongs to Advent.

Coated layer by layer

Chocolate-coated nuts like these are usually made in a rotating pan in which the nuts tumble while chocolate runs over them in thin layers and cools.

Layer by layer, this builds up an even coating that is equally thick all around the nut. The raw cocoa for the milk chocolate comes from CONACADO, an association of cocoa farmers in the Dominican Republic from which Berger Confiserie buys. The mass is then conched in Lofer for sixty to seventy hours until it melts velvety smooth.

All ingredients come from organic farming, from the honey to the hazelnut.

A copper-orange box for the gift table

Berger Confiserie packs the hazelnuts in a box in warm copper orange, whose window shows the hazelnuts in chocolate even before it is opened.

The lid shows a golden bowl full of chocolate-coated hazelnuts, with golden leaves and fresh hazelnuts beside it. This makes the box itself a gift. It looks just as good under the Christmas tree as in an Advent parcel or as a little gift to bring along when visiting at Christmastime.

A handful of hazelnuts in chocolate belongs to an Advent evening, in a bowl on the table, with mulled wine or with a glass of port after dinner.

Stored cool and dry, they stay crunchy and the coating tender; in warmth the chocolate softens.
