Galileo Colli Pesaresi Sangiovese Riserva DOC 2023, a rounder vintage of the Riserva

The 2023 Galileo Colli Pesaresi Sangiovese Riserva DOC from Azienda Guerrieri is the latest release of this aged flagship line, with a somewhat rounder entry than the 2021. Two years in cement and oak barrels, black cherry, plum, and tobacco.

Galileo Colli Pesaresi Sangiovese Riserva DOC 2023 from Azienda Guerrieri is the estate’s latest bottling of its aged flagship line, made from old Sangiovese vines with a small portion of Montepulciano. Dark fruit, spices, and a long finish – a wine that deserves time and a good occasion.

A milder vintage for the Riserva

According to Maria Giulia Guerrieri, 2023 was somewhat milder along the Metauro than 2021, which gave the grapes for the Galileo a gentler arc of tension without losing depth. As with its predecessor, the Sangiovese vines are between 20 and 30 years old, harvested by hand in the second half of September.

After 15 days of maceration and fermentation in stainless steel, this vintage also matures for twelve months in cement vats and another twelve months in large Italian oak barrels. The process remains identical across vintages; only the raw material changes with each harvest year.

The slightly milder autumn of 2023 ultimately results in a wine that seems more accessible even in its youth than the 2021, without losing the structure a Riserva needs. This difference is clearly noticeable in the glass, especially in the first few years after bottling.

Black cherry, spices, velvetier on the palate

On the palate, the 2023 is spicy, powerful, and velvety, with black cherry, plum, and a hint of tobacco from the barrel aging. The tannins are present but rounder than in the previous vintage, with a long, spicy finish.

The Galileo 2023 shows its strength when paired with porcini mushroom risotto, braised veal, or long-aged Pecorino, and you can immediately feel the added maturity compared to the young Colli Pesaresi. It also pairs well with a dark game pâté or a plate of osso buco with gremolata without overpowering the dish’s flavors.

From our own assortment, a plate of Strozzapreti with porcini mushrooms fits well, followed by a spoonful of Miele Millefiori honey with some aged goat cheese to round it off.

Two vintages of the same Riserva

The Guerrieri family has been farming their estate along the Metauro since around 1800, now in its 6th generation under Luca Guerrieri and his children Alberto and Maria Giulia. Of the 207 hectares, 48 hectares are dedicated to vines, farmed sustainably since 2004 without chemical fertilizers or pesticides.

Like the 2021, this vintage also requires patience during aging—two years between cement and oak barrels before it is even released for sale. The difference lies solely in the character of the vintage, not in the process, which remains the same year after year and gives the Riserva its consistency.

Those who would like to taste both Riserva vintages side-by-side can also find the Galileo 2021 from the same estate in the Azienda Guerrieri wine collection, which offers a bit more tension on the entry.
