Grüner Veltliner Käferberg 2017 - Single Vineyard Wine from Fred Loimer
The Loimer Grüner Veltliner Käferberg 2017 Kamptal DAC is a dry organic wine from the Erste Lage Käferberg in Austria. On the nose, the Loimer Grüner Veltliner Käferberg offers aromas of yellow apples, dried bananas, something vegetal, herbaceous, orange zest, and a hint of pepper. On the palate, it is rich in substance, with elegant extract sweetness, mineral grip, and a long finish. A single vineyard wine that truly expresses its origin: the Käferberg. Food pairing recommendation: anything fried in fat, such as the classic Wiener Schnitzel or Backhendl (fried chicken).
Fred Loimer – Winemaking
The grapes for this Fred Loimer Grüner Veltliner Käferberg Kamptal DAC come from the single vineyard – Riede Käferberg not far from Langenlois, where the Loimer winery is located. The up to 55-year-old vines are grown in a Guyot system in biodynamically managed hillside vineyards at 310-345 meters above sea level with sandy clay soils, marine sediment interspersed with gneiss. The Grüner Veltliner was harvested with a yield of 40hl/ha from mid-September to early October 2017 – of course by hand, selectively in small 20kg crates. After 24 hours of maceration, whole bunch pressing followed, then spontaneous fermentation in used 1250 and 2,500l oak barrels. Slow fermentation at a maximum of 24 degrees. The wine was aged for 11 months on the full lees in oak barrels, followed by another 9 months on the fine lees in stainless steel tanks, before being bottled in July 2019.

The Riede – The Vineyard
The vineyard, or as the Austrians say, the Riede Käferberg, is a warm, sheltered site not far from Langenlois in the Kamptal. It has long been known as a particularly good site and is therefore classified as Erste Lage. It lies at an altitude of 310 to 345 meters above sea level in the Pannonian continental climate, which brings hot, dry days and cool winds from the Weinviertel. The site faces south to southeast. The soils are incredibly complex. Here, you find the primary rock Gföhler Gneiss and mica schist overlaid with sand and clay marl.
2017 – The Wine Year
The year began with a harsh winter, followed by a rather warm spring and early bud break. Although May was disproportionately cool, the Ice Saints and the frosty nights caused little damage. Flowering was already over by mid-June in Langenlois. The first half of 2017 was marked by drought; the longed-for rain only arrived at the end of July. In August and September, the weather was perfect for the grapes to ripen physiologically. 2017 saw the earliest harvest at Weingut Fred Loimer that Fred Loimer had overseen as a winemaker. The result is firm, well-structured wines with good aging potential, such as the Grüner Veltliner Käferberg, which can age until 2020-2040.
