Gumpoldskirchen Große Reserve, a Blanc de Noir Brut Nature
The 2016 Gumpoldskirchen Große Reserve from Fred Loimer is an organic grower sparkling wine from the Thermenregion, a Blanc de Noir made from Pinot Noir with zero dosage. Golden yellow, silky, with ripe fruit—a masterpiece of classical bottle fermentation, bone-dry and noble.
Gumpoldskirchen Große Reserve 2016 is the second Große Reserve sparkling wine from the Fred Loimer winery, a Blanc de Noir Brut Nature made from pure Pinot Noir. The red grape is pressed white and aged on the lees for over 44 months—a grower sparkling wine with depth and a silky texture.
Bee sting cake, ripe fruit basket, lemon cake
In the glass, it displays fine-beaded foam and a golden yellow hue. The nose offers a delicate biscuit note, a ripe fruit basket, bee sting cake, and plum-filled yeast dumplings—a lush, inviting bouquet.
On the palate, it is wonderfully dry, with a silky texture and balanced acidity: ripe apples with skin, prune, hazelnut cookies, and a mineral grip. High-quality and noble, with a finish of lemon cake that lingers long.
The festive sparkling wine for dining
Its ripe fruit and silky texture make this Große Reserve a sparkling wine for festive occasions and for the kitchen.
Wonderful as an aperitif, as well as with light meat, roasted poultry, or a selection of ripe cheeses. Serve well-chilled at 8 to 10 degrees, in a white wine glass instead of a narrow flute. A highlight among our sparkling wines.
Pinot Noir from Gumpoldskirchen, pressed white
Unlike the Langenlois sparkling wines, this Große Reserve comes from Gumpoldskirchen, where the Loimers also manage biodynamic vineyards. The Pinot Noir was hand-picked on September 7th and 10th and pressed as whole bunches—hence Blanc de Noir.
Following spontaneous primary fermentation in steel tanks and malolactic fermentation, the base wine matured in wood for seven months on the gross lees, and another three months on the fine lees in stainless steel.
After the second fermentation, the sparkling wine aged on the lees for over 44 months before being disgorged in April 2021 without dosage. Falstaff and A la Carte each awarded it 94 points. You can find more from the producer under other wines from the Fred Loimer winery, such as the award-winning Brut Nature Große Reserve made from Chardonnay.
Creaminess without a gram of sweetness
This Blanc de Noir is best served well-chilled at 8 to 10 degrees, in a white wine glass instead of a narrow flute. Its ripe fruit unfolds with a little air. A Brut Nature completely without sweetness, but with creaminess and depth. Different, and precisely why it is good.
