Gemischter Satz mit Achtung – Orange Wine by Fred Loimer
The Fred Loimer Gemischter Satz mit Achtung 2020 is an orange wine, a white cuvée of Grüner and Roter Veltliner, Weißer and Roter Riesling, Welschriesling and Traminer, fermented on the skins. On the nose, the Gemischter Satz mit Achtung from Weingut Fred Loimer smells of ripe yellow fruits, accompanied by vegetal spice, white pepper, and the unmistakable Traminer note. On the palate, the cuvée is juicy, spicy, refreshing with well-integrated tannins and perfect balance. A fine organic natural wine with a rich structure. A wine that can be decanted, as a little air does it good. It pairs well with braised meat and Asian dishes.
Fred Loimer – Winemaking
The grapes for the Gemischter Satz mit Achtung from Weingut Loimer come from the Zöbing Eichelberg site, where they benefit from the special microclimate with hot days and cool night winds. Zöbing is an extension of the Waldviertel plateau and lies opposite the top site Heiligenstein. The up to 55-year-old vines grow in biodynamically managed mountain vineyards at 320 meters above sea level on gneiss weathered soils with mica schist. Fred Loimer wants to preserve and cultivate these varieties in his mixed-planted vineyards, as this "mess" of grape varieties produces a wonderful wine, steeped in Austrian tradition. Mid-September to early October 2020 – of course by hand, selectively in small 20kg crates. The partly destemmed and partly whole berries had four weeks to ferment on the skins in large wooden vats at a maximum of 25 degrees. Subsequently, the Gemischter Satz mit Achtung was aged for 12 months on full lees, then for another 6 months on fine lees, before being bottled in mid-April 2023.
The Gemischter Satz mit Achtung is an orange wine, which it clearly shows with its beautiful orange color, but which actually refers to a winemaking process in which the berries of white grapes are fermented on the skins, similar to red wine production, allowing the berries time to release aroma and tannins into the must. This is probably the oldest form of winemaking worldwide, originally from Georgia.
