Muskateller mit Achtung 2022 – Orange Wine by Fred Loimer
The Fred Loimer Muskateller mit Achtung 2022 is an orange wine from Austria. With its expressive aroma of orange zest and propolis, notes of black tea and hops, and its silky matte yellow color with orange reflections, the Fred Loimer Muskateller mit Achtung captivates. On the palate, this organic natural wine is wonderfully dry with a fine fruit melt; the complex nose is reflected on the palate and culminates in an endless finish of lime jelly and peppermint. A balanced natural wine with moderate alcohol content, offering great drinking pleasure. It pairs well with spicy cheeses with pear mustard, gravlax, or fatty roasts.
Fred Loimer – Winemaking
The grapes for the Muskateller mit Achtung from Weingut Loimer come from vineyards in Gumpoldskirchen at an altitude of 250 meters, where they benefit from the Pannonian climate with hot summers and dry autumns. They grow on clayey-sandy soils interspersed with calcareous gravel. The Muskateller was harvested on September 1, 2022 – naturally by hand, selectively in small 20kg crates. It underwent spontaneous fermentation on the skins for four weeks in oak barrels. Subsequently, the Muskateller mit Achtung was aged for 12 months on the full lees, then for another 6 months on the fine lees, before being bottled on February 29, 2024, without fining or filtration.
The Muskateller mit Achtung is an orange wine, which it clearly shows with its beautiful orange-yellow color. However, this actually refers to a winemaking process where the skins of white grapes ferment with the juice, similar to red wine production, allowing the skins time to release aromas and tannins into the must. This is probably the world's oldest form of winemaking, originally from Georgia.
